We recently connected with Chad Gilbert and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chad, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I was born and raised in the beautiful state of Montana. My childhood was spent seeing and experiencing these rugged landscapes and vast wildernesses that surrounded me. Growing up in there, I learned to appreciate the beauty of nature and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
My Mom was a photographer when I was growing up. Through watching and observing her, I discovered my love for photography. I was captivated by the way a single image could capture a moment in time and evoke emotions in the viewer. It wasn’t until I moved to Colorado that I really started taking pictures of the landscapes around me, truly learning to capture the beauty around me.
I have spent countless hours hiking and driving through the mountains, always on the lookout for the perfect image-the one that inspires and evokes emotion. I learned to pay attention to the details of the natural world around me, from the way the light fell on a mountain peak to the way a leaf fluttered in the breeze. Most importantly, I learned that there was beauty everywhere. You just need to know how to find it and be motivated to put in the work to get it.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
First, I’m a husband and a father to two incredibly talented children. I got into photography while living in Montana and it’s followed me to the Central Coast of California, Colorado and now Georgia. I’ve passed my love of photography to both of my kids. My preferred subject is nature – landscapes, mountains, lakes and most importantly the sky. I think what sets me apart is my attention to detail and the willingness to take the extra step to ensure the photo is not only beautiful, but technically flawless. I’ve seen too many professional images with obvious dust spots, focus problems, fringing, etc. Further, I really want the customer to be happy. I also take portraits and tell my clients that I don’t want to be paid until they have the final product and they are happy with the result. If they aren’t, then I’m going back to work to make sure they get what they want.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’ve struggled with severe anxiety and depression for most of my life. So, resilience is a topic that is close to heart. I’ve learned (usually the hard way) that you can never truly prepare for any of life’s challenges-you can never rest on your laurels. Resilience is my guard, my hedge, against those unforeseen events that will always pop up and it is something that I will always strive to improve.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Provide access to resources and funding: Artists and creatives need access to resources such as studio spaces, equipment, and materials. They also need funding to support their work, whether it’s through grants, sponsorships, or other means. Society can support these needs by providing access to resources and funding opportunities.
Offer education and training: Many artists and creatives may not have formal training or education in their field, but they can benefit from workshops, classes, and mentorship programs. Society can support these opportunities by investing in education and training programs that help artists and creatives develop their skills and knowledge.
Recognize the value of creativity: Creativity is a vital part of our society and economy, and it should be recognized as such. Society can support artists and creatives by valuing their contributions and recognizing the impact that they have on our culture and economy.
Foster collaboration and networking: Artists and creatives benefit from collaboration and networking opportunities, which can help them connect with other professionals.
