We were lucky to catch up with Chad & Debbie Hudspeth recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chad & Debbie, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
It brings us a lot of joy to see people vacation at our treehouses at Adventure Creek Ranch. Chad owns and runs Lonestar Tiny Homes and built all of the treehouses. Debbie manages all the short term rentals full time.
We love creating themed treehouses for others to enjoy. People today crave being out in nature where there is peace. We offer amazing fire pits with each treehouse for gatherings with family and friends. UTV rentals are available with access to 100 acres of trails through the forest where you can search for 8 hidden scavenger hunts. It is fun and full of adventure for kids of all ages.
Chad & Debbie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
During quarantine, we were set to build a tiny house park in a nearby town. When things shut down, we shifted to building treehouses on our property not knowing if people would travel out in the country to stay in them. As the airlines closed, we had an increase in our bookings which spurred us on to build more creating Adventure Creek Ranch. Currently, we have four treehouses and three tiny homes available to rent. We strive to create an experience that is different than other vacations. Our treehouses are heavily themed- Creekside Treehouse, Hobbit Treehouse, Bigfoot Treehouse and Texas Treehouse. We are known for the attention to detail. Each treehouse has unique features and we use wood from our own sawmill. We rent UTV’s to explore over 100 acres of trails with multiple scavenger hunters along the way.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Debbie was a 6th grade teacher at the local school when we built Creekside Treehouse. At the time, it took a large chuck of investment capital and was a big risk. We did not know if it would succeed. After 6 months in 2020 when things were shutting down, we realized we had on something good. We moved forward building The Hobbit Treehouse and after 1 year, Debbie was able to stop teaching and focus on Adventure Creek Ranch.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
We started out relaying 100% on our short term rentals coming from Airbnb and VRBO. At the time, we were unable to use any additional booking sites due to the calendars not syncing together. We decided to put a website together and drive traffic from social media to our site and ended up using a channel manager called Owner Reservations. It has been a struggle to make this work. Our greatest challenge has been marketing our website and figuring out social media.
