Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chacon Carter Jefferson . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chacon , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My mom is a blunt woman she didn’t sugar coat anything with me my brother and sister. She told us we have to work hard for what we want and to never give up on our dreams and even when it’s scary don’t give up keep going. She was the first entrepreneur I ever knew she did hair in our home and then in beauty shops when I told her she was the first entrepreneur I knew she said wow I never even thought of that. When I left my job of 20yrs to work in my business full time I thought she would be disappointed because the job was a good paying job but she was very excited for me. She said she was so happy I was going to go after my dreams and that she was so proud that made my decision a lot easier well that and my husband had my back as well lol.
Chacon , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started cooking and baking as a hobby in Milwaukee WI which is where I’m from my coworkers were my taste testers and would buy meals and treats from me. When I moved to Columbus OH IN 2010 I stopped for awhile I knew no one here and felt I would just let the hobby go but I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I became a mom in 2013 and in 2014 my husband and I bought a home and in 2016 I decided to have my home licensed to bake so I could sell here and also ship to other states. I got my website going and my LLC and pretty much hit the ground running. I started with only four treats on my site lol my grandmas pies and pound cakes and over time I started to add more items and can you believe it? Everything else on my site I taught myself ! I then got my servsafe manger license and started renting space at the 1400 food lab and launched the catering side of my business in 2019 and also wrote an Ebook Top 10 Things you need to start your home baking business which is on Barnes and Noble and Amazon https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/top-10-things-you-need-to-start-your-home-baking-business-chacon-carter-jefferson/1131603123?ean=2940163267682
We provided southern cuisine from fried catfish and chicken to salmon topped with crab lasagna baked Mac n cheese greens as well as rum cakes peach cobbler cupcakes Twixalicious bacon crumble cupcakes and lunch breakfast and brunch for event planners corporate companies and families having events or family gatherings.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I had to just start posting I wasn’t sure what to post and I was afraid to post to often. Once I got a business coach who taught me about content and how to post and best times to post and you can never post enough it was on LOL! I started to create content that my customers would see and immediately know what I did. I wanted them to never be confused and always wanted them to know how to reach me. Everyday I posted on Facebook instagram and LinkedIn and at first it was just friends ordering some family and co workers. I just kept posting and introducing myself and posting in groups. Eventually people I didn’t know would share my post and more people started referring me and my slogan Have a Sweet Treat Kind of Day™️ people started to remember it and say it to me at vendor events or say hey your the sweet treat good eat lady. People see my car and blow because my business name is on the back they scare me sometimes but I love it lol I always want people to feel comfortable and appreciated and know that all will be taken care of when they order from me because without them there is no Chacons Sweet Treats and Good Eats.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Before Covid came on the scene we were having customers to come pick up there orders from us at the kitchen but when Covid hit people were inside at that point I had to think of what would I do and I decided to do sweet delivery Saturday’s where we would have customers pre order and we would deliver to there homes and that worked so many people were happy to have food and treats delivered to there door we would always have our masks on and we would make sure they felt safe ordering from us.
