We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chace Freeman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chace , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve been toying with music my whole life but never fully committed until my friend asked me to go to a Young Thug concert back in 2016. This was my first concert i’ve ever been to so once i felt the energy and watch the performances seeing fans faces light up i just had to commit
Chace , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well it all really started when i was younger around age 5 my mom would play a lot of different genres from Biz Markie to Aerosmith to Micheal Jackson like everything lol So i been surrounded with music my whole upbringing but i didn’t attempt music until i was about 15 and that was using FL Studios. Didn’t last long so i started playing basketball until about age 21, picked up music again and been obsess ever since. Years later, i had a homie at the time named Snowsa and she got a viral record “Yank Riddim” and that pretty much was my “welcome to the industry” moment back in 2018. Coming from New Haven, Connecticut, That experience opened my eyes a lot just how huge the world is along with the way things work behind the scenes and stuff it’s like a whole other world lol. So after that situation happened, Covid hit so being online all day i ended in a livestream playing music for Anthony Kilhoffer and Che Pope lol After that Che Pope and i connected and was apart of his label WRKSHP but it didn’t last long so i ended up being independent again. I recently released a new project after 3 years named “Been Awhile” (out on all platforms) and it’s pretty tight lol
I think what sets me apart from others is my attention to detail with everything i do. Like i’m literally involved with everything from production, recording myself, creating cover art, video ideas everything along with some of my homies too i don’t want it to make it like i’m some super genius lol
I’m most proud of the amount of accomplishments i’ve always wanted to achieve in a short time span. Like it’s small wins but it’s what i always wanted to do so it’s HUGE to me. I’m just sitting back enjoying the journey i try to sit and soak in moments a lot cause i know one day once i’m on top it’s not gonna be the same you know?
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Aw man it’s a constant battle lol I’m always looked at as delusional but when you know you KNOW. The toughest battle is keeping your faith and keep working cause not gone lie i wanted to quit all this lol But something inside just kept me going
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Dawg making my own beats. I use to struggle finding producers and i was always broke when i loved a beat lol Through the years, I’ve gained a camp of homie producers shoutout to Kiddo, Lucho, Dom San, Arrington. those my guys. and girl lol Kiddo’s a women, tight right ? she’s cold lol She’s actually the one who taught me how to make beats to be honest.
