We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ceylin Donat (Balkon Pokes). We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ceylin below.
Ceylin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Tattooing, like any art form, is a journey that demands patience, practice, and an unyielding commitment to perfection. The stakes are high, given its permanent nature, but the rewards are immeasurable.
My own path took nearly three years to reach where I stand today, and yet, I am continuously evolving as an artist, forever a student of this craft. In the world of tattooing, there are no limits to what you can learn, and the experiences of other artists are a wellspring of wisdom. I encourage connecting with fellow creatives, hearing their stories, and discovering how they’ve forged their unique paths.
For those embarking on this artistic journey, I offer this advice: practice diligently on fake skin or even bananas&oranges, and never stop sketching in your free moments to uncover your artistic voice. Even daily doodles can be the genesis of your signature tattoo style. Steadiness of hand can be cultivated by many, but it’s your imagination and creativity that will carve out your unique tattoo style and brand.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well, my name’s Ceylin, and I am the creative behind Balkon Pokes. My journey of becoming a hand-poke tattoo artist began in 2020, during Covid, when time was ample. I started off with a humble kit and fake skin, I embarked on a quest to learn the art of tattooing. It was the first step of many that would shape where I am today.
It all began with tiny designs made on trusting friends. Yet, my main introduction into the sector was thanks to a ‘Melting Garments’ event on the USC campus. There, I met so many great people who not only embraced my artistry but became ambassadors of my craft, introducing me to a large range of clientele.
As I continued tattooing, I uncovered an affinity for nature-inspired designs and the timeless motifs found in the world around us, from ancient buildings to rustic relics. Hand-poke tattoos, with their organic flow, became the perfect medium to express these artistic musings.
But it’s not just the ink that defines my artistry; it’s the environment I craft. I try to make every session with me a sanctuary of comfort. Whether it’s the sips of tea, the melodies of some good good music, the presence of my beloved feline companion, Eddie, or the simple joy of conversation, I strive to make every moment of the tattoo memorable. And what truly sets my heart ablaze is the people I meet through tattooing. Each session is an intimate connection, a chapter in a shared story.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Undoubtedly, the most rewarding aspect of my work lies in the connections I make and the meaningful exchanges with them. This is particularly true in the realm of body art, where the process is an intimate one. As I tattoo, I have the unique opportunity to learn more about the person before me. It’s an exploration of their passions, musical tastes, creative inclinations, and sometimes even their identity as an artist. It’s a short yet valuable period of time during which one gets to share knowledge and experience.
Also, I find immense honor in the ability to channel one’s creative faculties and translate the inner workings of the mind onto another person’s body. It’s an awe-inspiring privilege to bring thoughts and concepts to life in such a tangible and permanent form.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
One of my biggest goals is to travel the world and tattoo along the way. I’d love to work as a guest artist in different studios or even go solo if I can figure out the logistics. I’m really passionate about the connections I make with people and learning about their cultures and beliefs. So, being able to meet people from all around the world would be a dream come true for me. To reach this goal, I’m always pushing myself to become a better artist and tattoo more every day.
