We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cesurian Champagne a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Cesurian thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
It started with meeting a kid that played basketball to their mom asking if u could train their daughter because she wanted to play basketball in high school.
I had just finished playing my final year of basketball in collegenand I was purchasing a storage unit for my apartment. After small talk, the owners stated that they have a daughter who plays basketball and they asked if it’s possible for me to work with her.
From that point moving forward, I helped this young lady play Varsity basketball and she would periodically send me messages of how well she played in her games.
After that, I realized that I can still be a part of the game without playing…
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Cez Champagne, Owner of NuMentality Skillz Academy. I train basketball players to prepare them to compete on any level.
The goal is to put my clients in position to understand the SMART way of playing basketball, developing a new mentality towards preparing for a game, and understand the process it takes to get to the next level.
The best reward I can receive from my brand is seeing my clients gain confidence and compete to their highest potential.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
When I first created NuMentality Skillz Training, I was a full-time educator. I was a Physical Education Teacher/High Basketball coach.
I was so occupied with coaching Varsity girls basketball, that my brand remained dormant for a few years. After 15 years of coaching high, the passion to coach.started to.decline. I realized that my passion to train was brewing.
I decided after 17 years of coaching to walk away from the sidelines and go behind the scenes on grooming passionate athletes to compete.
One year after walking away from coaching, I decided to stop teaching and become a full time entrepreneur. THE BEST DECISION I COULD POSSIBLY MAKE.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The best strategy that has helped me is devoting time to my clients outside of the training sessions. Making sacrifices to go out and watch them.compete and support them is priceless.
I’m excited to see them compete & apply the concepts we work on in our sessions to.game situations.
