We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cesar Giovani a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cesar, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Yes, I make a living through my creativity. I feel like this was something that just came naturally to me. I always have been a creative minded individual, and I just needed to really take the risk on using my creativity to make a living out of it. I started super early; in grade school I was already drawing on every surface I can find. I even took some multimedia classes that jump started a lot of things for me. Even had an internship out of High School with a video production company. All this while I was DJing at my house since I was 15. So, it isn’t “traditional” path by any means. I dipped into the world of graphics by designing my own flyers for my events back in 2007 and it kind of snow balled into art and seeing the limits I could really push all of this. And seems to be working fine, I couldn’t be happier.
Cesar, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, I am Digital Artist / Art Director / Graphic Designer. I create a lot of digital art pieces, and on the graphic design side I would like to believe that I help my clients see their dreams come true, as I work with a lot of startups, It is great to see their business grow, and being part of that process. But if you ask anyone, I know who Cesar Giovani is? You will probably get the same answer: An Artist, DJ, and a bit eclectic. And I can’t argue with that, it is who I am, and I think will always be. As for what I am most proud of, is being welcomed by the art community here in Houston. Having the movers and shakers of our lovely city come to me for work knowing that they can count on me to delivery my best work. That fills my soul.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
Well, that is a good question. I tried dipping into the NFT space. I currently have a piece up in Foundation since last April that hasn’t sold. So, I can’t say I am fully on board with it. Especially when you see all these Crypto Apes or some variation of some character with different color schemes. I am still on the fence about it, I mean it is a great way for a lot of artists to sell their work and make royalties from it, but I feel like the market is way to saturated with pixelated punks or whatever the next trend is. And some great artists get pushed to the side lines. I feel that to fully be invested in NFTs you must really sell it, and I mean all the time. A lot of times you have try to drive attention to your NFT on Twitter (Which I hate BTW), it feels like you are begging for people to buy your art, and I rather someone organically like my work and would like to purchase it. But we will see where it goes, it is still a bit of a new concept so there is a lot more to see. Maybe next year my view will change, we will see.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being able to share with the world your soul. Sounds cliché, but it is true. I put a lot of what you may not see externally, in my art. A lot of it is colorful, whimsical and a touch of somberness. It is who I am as a person. Reason you see a lot of flowers, butterflies (lots of butterflies) in my work. I want to showcase these emotions in ways I can’t really put into words. So, sharing that and having others understand it is so rewarding for me. Plus I have so many lovely people share their thoughts on my work and it is rewarding to see that someone connects with my art.
