We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cellus Hamilton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cellus, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I’ve had the opportunity to work on several meaningful projects throughout my career. I’ve created theme songs for the Atlanta Falcons, tv/web series, & prominent educational initiatives. Many of these projects have been much bigger than any one thing I’ve done as a solo artist. I’ve also been able to do songwriting and music production for creatives who value and desire to implement music into the work they do. But even with my expansive portfolio of commissioned projects, the most meaningful work I’ve done has often been my own. I’ve released 4 solo albums that have spanned various musical styles and genres. With each album, I pride myself on expanding into a new soundscape that will highlight my growth, creative range, and faith.
Cellus, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began my music career when I was eight years old. I was heavily influenced by my mother, who was a buzzing hip-hop artist in the Midwest and South. She was a frequent performer and allowed me to witness her songwriting process and see her practicing for her concerts in the living room. With her playing hip-hop around me and my dad’s love for oldies and smooth r&b, I was destined to be musically inclined. My direct involvement with music came through my having opportunities to perform at my Atlanta church on a regular basis. Because of the music scene in Atlanta, I was constantly surrounded by music as well as a city that supported its youth through many musical programs. This allowed me to develop as a performer at a young age. My most significant accomplishments have been 3 charting albums, 2 successful national tours, and performances on BET.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My social media following has been the result of 14 years of consistent hard work. It holds the story of thousands of posts that never received their deserved recognition. Many music videos and lyric videos that received zero engagement were a necessary part of the story. With social media, you never know exactly what your followers and fans will gravitate towards. It’s all about being consistent. One of the main secrets and strategies that I’ve learned is to not overthink what I’m posting. Worrying about what others may think is one of the guaranteed ways to miss out on posting organic and valuable content. As I’ve decided to create posts that are authentic and honest, I’ve recognized my engagement increase organically. People recognize honesty and it always shines through. As my wife tells me often, followers can always identify forced content.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal and mission are driven by the desire to help people encounter the gospel of Jesus Christ. It’s what wakes me up and gets me out of bed each morning. It is that goal that has allowed me to persevere in the midst of discouragement and rejection. While many of my peers have quit, I’ve been able to hold a career spanning several decades due to the LORD’s unwavering grace toward me. As He’s kept me through the trials of life, I’m still standing and here to tell about it. And as long as I have that assignment and commissioning from Him, I’ll continue to create music and art that changes and inspires the world to see Him in a powerful way.
