Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Celita Williams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Celita, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
There is no better teacher than trying and failing. And there is no second-better teacher than the feedback from others. Whether it was becoming a better IT professional, writing or performing a better poem, or building a better mechanical keyboard, all of these crafts were learned as a result of the repetitive process of trying, testing, refining.
It’s amazing all the information that is available to us online. Memorization techniques, coding or script writing courses, and endless, endless videos on the world of mechanical keyboards, how to manipulate the sound and feel of the keys, and how to customize every detail to the client’s liking.
The main obstacle is always the limitation of time. Once you get others paying for your services, usually that helps eliminate the financial burden, but time is never in abundance and so that’s where serious management skills need to come into place and boundaries need to be set on other areas of your life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m Celita! Half techy – half stage performer – all creative! My primary creative claim to fame is as a spoken word performer. I can be found around town and open mics from time to time, on the stages of churches, or even some of your favorite live music or jazz venues. People and bands book me for inspirational content, social justice content, or content tailored and written specifically for their particular event, celebration, or theme.
Most recently I have also started building mechanical keyboards. First this was mainly a personal hobby, but as I posted and shared more and more of my own projects, individuals began to request commissioned boards for themselves and others. As a result Luxe Keyboard LLC was born.
I’m an IT professional by trade so all of my other creative pursuits need to happen on the nights and weekends or during strategic time off. However, I’ve been able to maintain my spoken word career for 20 years now and I look forward to my longevity as a mech board builder.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth and a consistent online presence has been the best source for both my creative endeavors. There is no better advertisement than being booked and then showing up and doing a fantastic job! And then, once individuals find you, regularly keeping new content before them works wonders in keeping you front of mind and the first they reach out to when they have a project that fits your skills.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I indulge in podcasts and books about building and maintaining businesses. There is always a new nugget that can be gained from every story. One consistent theme is the idea of proof of concept – create SOMETHING, put it out in the wild, and see what the response is. The customer decides which product works best for them and once they point it out, put all the steam you can behind providing that product or service.
