We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Celestial Randle. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Celestial below.
Celestial, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
For years black women had been hearing about going natural and learning about their own hair. The goal was to stay away from harmful chemicals that alter and straighten our naturally curly hair. For many of us, we are taught to straighten our hair with a relaxer and a lot of us adhere to that all our lives. I stepped away from that idea and my hair was thriving better than it ever had. I choose to create products for myself because what I saw for women with natural hair like mine was almost non-existent. At that time, women with 4C hair were not really represented in hair products. The hair products seen were geared for looser hair textures. Over time, I think this unconsciously creates a dislike for what is naturally growing out of your own scalp. I know because this was me! As my hair flourished, questions came about what I did and how. I had so many questions about what I was using, I knew what I was using was needed. For many women with natural 4C hair, seeing their own as a beautiful wasn’t outwardly shown. I wanted women to know that their kinky, curly, and coily hair was beautiful.

Celestial, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well, my name is Celestial Randle and I’m the founder of Melanated Moisture. I’ve always tried to take care of my hair and after going natural, I decided to make products for my own hair. That led to creating products for others to help in their journey for healthy hair. I create products that help in taking care, and nourishing the hair, which in turn, helps you to love your 4C hair. There aren’t many products out with the 4C specific texture in mind. I’m proud to say that hair isn’t just the focus. Yes, the goal is healthy hair but the goal is to also love yourself and what God has created in you!

Any fun sales or marketing stories?
About a year or so after I started Melanated Moisture, I found an event that I could be apart of! I had never done an event, never had to make a bulk amount of product, and had a limited amount of marketing materials. This event was in Austin and I had a small amount of people who knew about Melanated Moisture. I spent months gathering and making everything that was needed, sent samples, and created marketing flyers. I spent nights worrying if I had made enough, and done enough to be successful for the event and continue with this business. I had no idea how it would end or if people would accept another haircare company. As the event started, we were well received and the feedback was amazing. The best part was that NaturallyCurly.com did a feature on the event and named us as one of there favorites at the event! It was huge risk to take and the experience was fantastic. I learned so much in that one event and was so proud to say I had taken that step.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients that I have had so far is word of mouth. We tend to under estimate the power of that!
