We were lucky to catch up with Celeste Rose Benzschawel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Celeste Rose, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My most meaningful project to date is my debut EP titled “Part-Time.” It means a lot to me not only to have this collection of songs out in the world, but to have had the support I did in getting it completed. I launched a Kickstarter campaign in January 2021 and was able to raise $5,500 for the recording, mixing, and mastering of the project at Evergroove Studio in Evergreen, Colorado.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Celeste Rose and I’m a Wisconsin-raised, Denver-based solo singer-songwriter who has a tendency to sing about country roads, stars, whiskey, and daydreaming. While most of my tunes are folk or Americana-leaning, I’m still developing my sound and exploring different styles – ever evolving!
I began playing music at 10 years old (now 27) when my parents found my Dad’s childhood guitar in the attic and signed me up for lessons. I fell in love with it and was a dedicated student until I graduated high school. As a young teen, I started performing locally and continued to do so throughout high school and college, even playing in a couple bands. I wrote songs throughout this time, but didn’t start writing seriously until I was in my early 20s.
I’m now regularly playing at bars, breweries, open mics, and small venues in both Wisconsin and Colorado. I released my first single, “Lines,” in April, 2020, and my debut EP “Part-Time” followed soon after in July, 2021. My latest release is the single, “Running With The Wolves.” My next goal is to complete my debut full-length album, which is currently in the works!
Aside from performing, I’ve enjoyed recording vocals on other creatives’ works, including friends Sara Flows, Keegan MacDonald, and Blake & Yeekeng. I hope to continue doing this kind of work in the future, and am considering implementing it into my regular routine/making it a part of my business.
At the end of the day, I think we all want to relate to each other and connect through our shared experiences, and the most effective way for me to do that is through songwriting. I’m so excited to be working on an album where I’m pushing myself to try new styles and to write from the deepest parts of myself, all in hopes to continue connecting with my current audience and build an even bigger one. I want folks to know that there are fun things coming from me!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I’m sure most others would say the same, but I think my goal/mission in music and songwriting is to continue proving to myself that I can do it. Even though I have projects out in the world already, I know that the next one will be better than the last, and it’s an exciting journey to challenge myself in that way.
I can always play and write music for others, but at the end of the day, I want to do it for me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
There are so, so many rewarding aspects of being an artist, like landing a gig at a new place, gaining followers on social media, having folks buy your merch, and of course, building connections with people.
But on top of all that, I think the biggest compliment you can get is from other creatives. When other songwriters praise your lyrics, or the chords you chose, or your style, or whatever really – it’s unmatched. There really is no better feeling than a fellow artist being like, “How did you do that?!”
