Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cecilia Kander. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Cecilia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The mission of Loved and Free Co. is to feature items that are handmade by artisans who are survivors of human trafficking that are paid fair wages. This ensures each person is paid fair and ethical wages during the manufacturing of goods and services. I’ve seen first hand the struggle of human trafficking survivors to find opportunities that will pay them fair and ethical wages for their time and hard work.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In 2016 I started For Freedom Initiative, a non-profit organization that prevents human trafficking by equipping, educating, and empowering our community. We do this by spreading awareness on the issue of human trafficking. We truly believe that we can prevent human trafficking from occurring if we make people aware of the the signs, and the facts of human trafficking.
Since starting For Freedom Initiative in 2016, we have educated hundreds of people all over the world on what human trafficking is. I’ve personally mentored survivors and held Bible Studies with them. One of the ongoing projects at For Freedom Initiative is the Dove Scholarship, where we award survivors a scholarship to continue their education.
In 2020, in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, Loved and Free Co. was born. Loved and Free Co. is a fairtrade marketplace where all items are handmade by human trafficking survivors from all over the world. After working with survivors and being a domestic violence survivor myself, I witnessed, and knew first hand how hard it is to start a new life with nothing. I was blessed with my wonderful mother who always believed in me, and a family that was so supportive, but many people don’t have that. By selling their products, I know they are being paid fair wages, and I’m also sharing their wonderful talents for the world to see.
10% of all sales go straight to the Dove Scholarship by For Freedom Initiative. This really brings Love and Freedom full circle. It’s amazing to see the beautiful work made by survivors who are now free! I love showcasing each item, and knowing that I’m helping survivors all over the world remain free.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I started Loved and Free Co. with my own funds. Although I understand that’s not ideal for every small business, it’s the story of how Loved and Free Co. began. I had a passion and I’ve continually invested in it.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I’ve found that setting up pop-up shops are a great way to get new customers. I’ve set up at schools, churches, shopping mall parking lots. There are always people who are interested in hearing what about your products.
Another perk is there are so many small businesses that also are selling at these pop-up shops. You will meet others who are also small business owners. Talk to them, don’t be afraid to hear advice from those ahead of you.
Share your business on your personal social media channels as well. Your friends and family will more than likely going to be your first customers. Ask them to share your posts to their followers as well.
Be a person of integrity. For those who personally know you, and know your character, they will back you and your business up and be more likely to share your business with others for you if you are a person of integrity.
