Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cecile Jordan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cecile, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I never thought I’d become a social media manager. It all started during the pandemic when I pivoted to being a virtual assistant. In researching services to offer clients, I decided to add social media management. After doing it for a year or two as part of my virtual admin services, I realized I loved it – and that there was a growing need for dedicated social media managers.
The pandemic caused an explosion in social media use. With so many people stuck at home, platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok became lifelines. Businesses had to meet their customers where they were spending time – online.
As a virtual assistant, I helped clients post content and engage with their audiences. I learned the platforms inside and out. I figured out how to create eye-catching posts, develop content calendars, analyze data to improve engagement, and run ads. I saw how impactful social media could be for businesses when done right.
Eventually I decided to focus exclusively on social media management. Virtual assisting taught me a lot, but my passion was in developing social strategies and connecting with audiences online. Now as a social media manager, I get to focus all my energy on what I love.
My pandemic career pivot was unexpected. But by following my interests and the changing needs of businesses, I found my calling as a social media pro. I’m excited to help brands thrive on these ever-evolving platforms. My accidental career discovery turned out to be the perfect fit.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi there! I’m Cecile Jordan, founder and CEO of Social Butterfly Services. Our social media agency specializes in creating visually engaging content and managing accounts on Instagram.
I’ve always had a passion for connecting with people online. Four years ago, I started offering social media services while working as a virtual assistant. But it quickly became clear that social media was my true calling, so two years ago I made the leap into doing it full time with Social Butterfly.
Since then, we’ve helped dozens of businesses and entrepreneurs grow their audiences and get real results on Instagram. I love being able to help people share their brand’s story, reach new customers, and build genuine connections through the power of social media.
Our specialty is crafting gorgeous photos, captions, stories, and reels that capture attention and spark engagement. We also handle all the backend work like optimizing hashtags, analyzing data, and responding to comments.
But my favorite part is seeing our clients gain confidence and find their voice on social media. It’s so rewarding to guide them through the process of establishing their brand aesthetically and personally on Instagram.
I’m proud that in just a few years, Social Butterfly Services has already made a real impact for small businesses, bloggers, artists, and creatives. And I’m excited to see where we can take things next!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I used to be one of those people who would meticulously plan out every detail of my life – my schedule, my goals, my strategy for achieving those goals. I thought having a solid plan was the key to success. But since becoming an entrepreneur, I’ve had to do a major mindset shift. I’ve learned that adaptability is much more important than sticking to a preset plan.
The nature of entrepreneurship is that things rarely go exactly according to plan. New opportunities come up that you want to pursue, or roadblocks pop up that force you to change course. At first, this would really stress me out and make me feel like I was failing if my plans went off track. But over time, I’ve learned to embrace the unexpected changes and become more flexible.
Now when my original strategy or schedule gets disrupted, I don’t panic. I’ve learned to quickly assess the new situation, adapt as needed, and keep moving forward. The key is being open to changing paths while still pursuing the larger vision. I’ve come to realize that this ability to pivot is one of the most crucial skills for succeeding as an entrepreneur. The plans I make are simply guides, not rigid structures I need to stubbornly stick to no matter what.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I know the thought of building an audience on social media can seem daunting. Where do you even start? What should you post about? How do you get people to notice you in the sea of content?
I’ve been there too. When I first decided I wanted to be known as a social media manager, I felt overwhelmed. But I learned a few simple strategies that really worked for me, and I want to share them with you in case they might help you too.
The most important thing is to figure out what you want to be known for – your niche. Get really clear on who you want to serve and how you can help them. For me, it was supporting small business owners with social media management.
Once you have your niche, start creating content that provides value around that topic. Share your knowledge and expertise freely. I gave tips for optimizing social media profiles, scheduling content, and engaging followers.
While you’re posting great content, make sure you also show up consistently. I tried to post daily on my top channels. When people saw me regularly, it built familiarity and trust.
Beyond the content itself, be authentic and transparent along the way. Let your personality shine through. Share glimpses into your life, be open about your journey, and connect with others in your community. I found that allowed me to build genuine relationships.
Most importantly, don’t get discouraged! Building an audience takes time. Stay focused on serving others through your content, and the followers will come. I hope these tips help you gain clarity and confidence as you work to build your community. Show up, share your gifts, and you’ll go far.
