Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ceaira Jessamy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ceaira, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
There’s nothing like pressure to create diamonds from coal, and bleak situations into opportunities. When Covid snuck up on us, it hit a lot of lives hard. As someone working in an international school back then, the pandemic forced me to switch gears when my school closed. With the doom and gloom that the news focused on, it was difficult to stay positive at times. It felt like I was becoming more and more desensitized until I was merely existing, but not truly living. However, one day, I heard a phrase that hit me like an alarm clock to the face (remember those?), and I realized that my mindset had been clouded.
“Surround yourself with beauty.” Whether that be through visuals that move us, quotes that inspire and motivate, or humor that cleanses the fatigue of life. Wondering what I could do within the confines of quarantine, I turned my hobby of graphic design into a business. “ReCreating how you imagine and communicate with the world through art.“ I wanted to recreate a healthier environment through designs—adding some necessary beauty to our lives. And, hopefully, change our perspective from getting trapped in the small glimpses of negativities to seeing the wholeness of the picture. Perspective is the essence of life.
Ceaira, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When graphic designing was still just a hobby, I mostly did custom tees and artwork for people. Since becoming ReCreations, the scope has expanded to business logos, customized art, tattoo designs, pre-designed clothing apparel and accessories, and more! To better meet the needs of clients, ReCreations has a separate site for those interested in customized commissions and projects. If you have an idea you’d like to bring to life, we’d love to be your pencil. We create art with you in mind. Each project has brought an enriching experience, and, many times, a valuable lesson. Personally, I find working on commissioned tattoo designs to be my favorite. Though some requests prove to be difficult—especially when I’m not feeling particularly inspired or motivated—I usually find the end results to be more rewarding for that very reason.
Our other site holds our pre-designed collection on Storenvy. There, we introduce many new designs for tops, masks, and totes for purchase. Much of the art in our online store ranges from inspiring to sassy and quirky, giving voice to the surrounding beauty. We are currently preparing for our futures expansions. Stay tuned for the launch of sneakers, canvas art, and character stickers. Don’t be shy, float on by! International customers welcome too~
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Today is a different world where it’s easy to get caught up in the regular task of getting through the day or lost in the negativity that hitches a ride with various problems that seem to plague us. I mentioned before that perspective is the essence of life. Whether you’re having a good day or a bad one is based on how you look at it. The main mission of ReCreations is to be the catalyst that creates a different outlook on life by speaking truth through art. A lot of the inspiration and ideas have been colored by personal experiences, research, or just listening and watching people as they live their lives.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s definitely a tie between seeing the initial idea successfully take form and having a satisfied client use my artwork (especially those who’ve tattooed them on their body—can’t get much higher praise than that).
