We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful CDK on the mic. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christian below.
Alright, CDK on the mic thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I think of risk as opportunities to step outside of your comfort zone. I’ve built my brand off risk. The first risk that I took was taking all of the money that I made the summer before college to invest in starting my business. During that time period I worked at Mcdonalds only making $8.25 walking away with biweekly checks of $300 on a good check. I knew college was expensive but I had a dream to follow. I spent money buying equipment with no gigs lined up, well not yet at least!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
CDK on the Mic is brand that was founded on July 17th, 2017. Coming into North Carolina A&T as a first generation college student I knew I needed some money to stay afloat. So I started throwing parties on the side as a hobby that would later elevate me into a nationally recognized entertainer. My introduction to the corporate side of the business came in 2019 during my first tenure at 102 Jamz as a part time radio personality. From there I went on to be nominated for Radio personality of the year within my first six months of being On-Air. This gave me the platform to be nominated and named The #1 Ranked HBCU Host in The Nation. One of the things I’m most proud of. While also finishing college with Nick Cannon paying my Tuition.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn the lesson of saving money! When it comes to the entertainment business it’s peak season and VERY slow seasons as well. I learned that the hard way. During the summer and winter months is where I experience this. After about 4 years of this job I finally understood to put money aside to help carry me through those months in particular.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Hosting a party with Floyd Money Mayweather at the age of only 20 years old changed my entire perspective on the entertainment business. Standing in a room full of multiple millionaires that look just like me gave me motivation to see the bigger picture giving me the drive to put in over 12 hours most days
