We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cayman Kane a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cayman, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
During my high school years, I discovered my passion for pursuing a career in art. I always had a love for drawing and sketching, but it wasn’t until high school that I realized the numerous opportunities available to earn a living as a professional artist. After graduating high school, I started participating in art festivals in Dayton, Ohio, where I made a few sales. This encouraged me to take up art as a career and pursue it further.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi there! My name is Cayman K., and I’m a folk artist from Dayton, Ohio. I’ve been creating art for as long as I can remember, with my family always being supportive of my efforts, especially my grandmother. She was my number one fan and always appreciated whatever I made. When she passed away, I decided to go by Cayman as a tribute to her. She used to say, “See you later alligator.”
I started my career in my first apartment, where I used a jigsaw and a cheap TV tray from Walmart as my cutting station. Later, I moved to an art studio at the Front Street Buildings in downtown Dayton, where I upgraded to a more professional set-up. I create my artwork using salvaged materials such as old canvases, wood, fabric, metal, masonite, and other materials. My pieces are whimsical and colorful, with subject matter ranging from animals to motifs inspired by African and indigenous roots.
My ultimate goal is to create art that is accessible and affordable for everyone. I believe that art is a powerful tool for self-expression, and it can brighten up someone’s day while being a conversation starter in their home. I’ve been pursuing this career for four years now, and I truly believe that creating works that cultivate positivity and make people smile is my calling.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal as an artist is to create art that not only holds spiritual significance but can also be appreciated on its own merit. To me, creative expression is a form of spirituality. Through expressing yourself creatively, you can become more in tune with your emotions and desires, and communicate these concepts through art. This perspective motivates me to continue my craft with confidence and hopefully inspire others to do the same.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being an artist has its rewards, and one of the most fulfilling ones is being part of a vibrant and positive art community. Dayton’s artist community is an exceptional example of this. They are supportive, active, and always eager to collaborate with others. There are always groups and events open for participation. The locals are also very supportive of the artists in the area. Every First Friday of the month, galleries open and there is always an excellent turnout. People come in, chat, and never hesitate to compliment an artist’s work. This is what makes creating worthwhile.
