Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Caylin McDonie. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Caylin, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success is so different for everyone! But In my view of success it’s getting to the point of your career where your skill meets your creative prowess to allow your minds eye to show to yourself and your audience. To be able to achieve your vision.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My names Caylin McDonie and I’ve been in the makeup and beauty industry for over 8 years! I loved the endless possibilities of the industry and creative freedom it provides. I started off my career working with wedding party’s maybe an occasional prom. Although lucrative, I was really craving more creative freedom which brought me to editorial avant-garde. This is where I really started to find myself in this industry! And in that journey is what brought me to develop a Makeup line that revolves around creativity, innovation and consumer conscious ideas! I strive to provide my clients with services and products they can feel good about that promotes creativity and ease to create
Have you ever had to pivot?
A really big career pivot for me was my transition from a wedding makeup artist to an editorial artist! I think for most makeup artist starting off as the entry start with weddings or special events and don’t get me wrong I loved it when I was doing it full time. But after awhile I realized just how burnt out I was getting. I was dragging my feet doing the same routine over and over again. That was I huge sign for me that I needed to sit down and access why I was feeling so trapped with something I genuinely loved? I really was just missing creating and having that creative freedom with clients and art. From there I really started to find my way into the editor/ advantgarde
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Not everyone wants to see your success in this industry! There is lots of competition and sometimes not so nice but it’s also filled with some of the most supportive kind hearted people I know. Like most industries really cherish those people that root you on and always roof for each other!
