We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Catron Wallace. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Catron below.
Catron, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Life is not solely about money. It is about the experiences we have, the people we meet, and the challenges we face. I am grateful for all of them. While I may not be financially wealthy, the fulfilling experiences I’ve had so far make me feel rich. I am the only provider for myself and my little rescue dog, Edge. Making a living with my art hasn’t been easy, but I believe that facing challenges head-on is the only way to grow and become stronger. I embrace each obstacle as an opportunity to learn and adapt. Life may not be easy, but pursuing my true passion makes it all worth it.
Catron, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Catron Wallace, an artist based in Nashville. My artistic journey started over two decades ago, and I specialize in imaginative contemporary art that aims to enrich my clients’ surroundings and create a sense of tranquility and mystery in their spaces. I am entirely self-taught and use a variety of materials like acrylics, watercolors, graphite, coffee grounds, and sand to create a signature layered effect on my canvases. Each stroke is a symphony of senses, and it breathes life into my creations.
Since 2016, I have established roots in Downtown Nashville and have integrated myself into its vibrant artistic community. In January 2020, Nashville Lifestyle magazine awarded me the Art Creator of the Year for 2020, further fueling my passion for creating art and connecting with the community. My portfolio adorns the walls of collectors and iconic locales, including the AT&T Building Nashville Abstract Women of Art Wall, Studio Bank, and 505 Building in Nashville.
I am an abstract artist, painter, art instructor, and art creator. I am excited to continue creating art that not only enchants the senses but also brings joy and connectedness.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I vividly recall the day when I presented my new artwork to a gallery that was representing me in my early career. The gallery owner’s acute criticism was harsh, and she refused to display my artwork. However, instead of giving up, I asked her for feedback to improve my art. I went back to my studio, made the necessary changes, and returned with my artwork. To my astonishment, the gallery owner was impressed by my pieces, and they were a huge success with collectors. All of my artwork sold out, proving that constructive feedback and perseverance can lead to success.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As a person who has reached the age of 60, I have faced numerous challenges and changes in both my personal and professional life. However, I strongly believe that these experiences have helped me grow and develop into the person I am today. The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting economic crisis have been particularly difficult for individuals in creative fields like myself. Despite this, I see this as an opportunity to start anew and reset. In my studio, I have been experimenting, practicing, and pushing myself to new limits while constantly asking “What if I…” to explore new ideas. Additionally, I am exploring new business strategies to stay ahead of the curve. Although it can be daunting, I find it invigorating and exhilarating to take on new challenges. I am excited to see what the future holds.
