We were lucky to catch up with Catie McYeee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Catie McYeee, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
My legacy is simple . The reason I started this radio station was to get the music heard by the community that wasn’t being played on the radio. Giving chances to street edits which means it’s not censored per se and to new artist who may not be at their prime but definitely have the hunger and make dope songs. That was initially what Connected Radio was about my first radio station was called Giants and Elephants Radio because I bridged San Francisco and Oakland music together then when I included Sacramento, I moved the name to Connected Radio . I hope that people remember me as a kind hip person who put people in position for success and a voice for the unheard. I’m a huge fan of the underdog.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
OK, I am the on air talent for Connected Radio on the 360 radio which is an Internet based fully licensed radio station. I’ve been with them about 7 years , prior to that I was the founder and host of Giants and Elephants radio, which was an exclusively Northern California music podcast before a podcast was a podcast. This was actually a live stream on YouTube and before that it was a live stream on something called U stream, but we were mostly on the web playing music. I started by interning for a larger hip-hop artist and I went on tour with them recreationally so I was able to see the ins and outs of the game early Plus my father was in that business. He was an arena manager my whole childhood. My unique spin is that I am genuinely invested in this culture, which is Northern California, Bay Area, Sacramento, and the music / culture that is specific to this region. I know more about it than some of the artists that are directly involved in it. I have interviewed thousands of people majority of them are new artists on the rise as well as the industry legends , but it’s not just music it’s chefs ,nail techs ,hair stylist clothing brands and the list goes on . I started using Mc on some of my words like McArtist and McMagazine just to be clever and it McStuck lol I cleverly add it to most of my online vernacular.
I am a massive brand ambassador in the area , if you come on my platform and you have a brand and you leave me with a piece of it I’m going to creatively incorporate it into my life and make sure people see it and want it. I have definitely mastered that.
Definitely a master of ceremonies for hire if you need someone to lead your retreat speak to your crowd motivate , comedy. I can do whatever you need. I’m very versatile in that aspect and I take it seriously everything is a job to me. Just because it’s fun does not mean it’s not work and I like to display my respect for the culture and my role in it by maintaining professionalism.
I offer interviews to people who need to promote their music. Essentially they are like electronic press kits. They are video audio and I have even done written reviews. I think what makes me cater to these up-and-coming artists is because they are most of the time overlooked until they aren’t !!! I am there for them until they are seen and hopefully throughout the process . I maintain a professionalism while maintaining a knowledge of the culture as well as current political climates in the region, I have been offering this for over 12 years. I offer these services for a reasonable price. Occasionally comped or in exchange for services promo and or merchandise . I have an award-winning DJ Who is a celebrity in this region himself as well as award-winning photographer as and other show hosts that work with me and have won awards at the Grrrd Awards themselves , my brand is simple like I said it’s just genuine be genuine be transparent give from your heart and act from your heart and I feel everything comes back triple fold.
And in finality I am a social media beast. I train people how to do what I do which was not easy before there were multiple publishing apps. Like repost or tweet deck I am very very present on social media and share as many peoples content as possible .because isn’t that what it’s for ?

How did you build your audience on social media?
I just genuinely followed everyone who I was interested in as well as some who didn’t follow me , I went against the grain by showing others that it can not hurt to SHOW McLOVE
Whether they were supportive of me whether they responded whether they looked down their nose at me I still promoted their content (IF IT WAS GOOD OR I LIKED IT)
I always tell everyone it’s going to be really hard for me to clean up my Instagram or my social media because it’s a primarily organic account. I probably have thousand bots or ghost accounts but the other 10k are legitimately people I have met or influenced or vice versa minus some MEGA stars the Jay z and Martha Stewart’s of the world I still succumb to the magnet of following some untouchables
Someone once compared my posting style to mainstream, mainstream, independent mainstream, mainstream, independent, mainstream, mainstream independent because I would always wedge an independent artist or entrepreneur between two main streams. It just made sense to me.
To this day, I try to answer all direct messages and reply to all comments if I can, but in the same breath, I do not read all of the comments. If I feel it’s taking a negative turn I won’t read it. That’s just my stubbornness refusing to accept anything negative someone once told me that wasn’t real realistic, but I feel as though it is if it’s within my control.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I told the truth I never did bad business. If I did something wrong I corrected it . Even if it meant coming out of my own pocket financially, I have been very successful because of my reputation. my known excellence in my field is definitely very well known and I think the money follows so I don’t really worry about it because I think reputation is key.. I’ve often thought of bringing on a marketing publicist of sorts, but I just haven’t done it yet. I haven’t gotten to that level. I still manage everything myself..
