We recently connected with Catiara Marie and have shared our conversation below.
Catiara , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
Tarot is trending everywhere right now.
Tarot is all over social media, especially TikTok and Instagram. You can find new and seasoned readers alike, pulling a ‘Card of the Day’ or doing readings for the “collective” or teaching others how to read tarot cards.
You can find Tarot imagery on clothing, bags, home decor, and jewelry.
I can’t remember the last time I went into a store and didn’t find a tarot related item.
Tarot cards can be used in so many different ways that they appeal to a very wide audience. Some use them for self-reflection and as a psychotherapy tool, while others use them as guidance for decision-making, and some as divination to predict what the future may hold.
Catiara , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been reading tarot cards for over 26 years, long before they were trending.
One of the things that sets me apart from many other tarot readers is my love of predictive divination.
I like to look at what the future holds so that my clients may be prepared and take the actions necessary to succeed.
So many tarot readers tend to focus on self-reflection, shadow work, past traumas, and emotional healing, I do touch on those subjects when necessary, I typically tend to focus on prediction and preparation for the future.
My clients usually reach out to me whenever their universe feels like a chaotic mess and together we consult the tarot cards for direction – a way forward.
I offer curious questions, new perspectives, and challenges that honor my clients’ goals and help them develop the skills that they need to live their best life in the now and towards the future.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I won’t lie – growing clientele in an oversaturated market is difficult.
There are definitely pros and cons to having tarot trending.
With tarot being more readily accepted as a viable source of guidance, introspection, and divination, it is much easier to be taken seriously.
Unfortunately, it also means that everyone is doing it, regardless of their experience or intentions.
I have found that the best way to build clientele is by the old-fashion way of word-of-mouth.
Always put forth your best effort, be honest, and build relationships with your clients so that they trust you and want to share you and what you do for them with others.
I have spent plenty of money on advertising to no avail. The best way to build clientele is to go out in public and meet people by doing readings at fairs, events, and parties.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
When it comes to an industry like tarot, that is highly individualized and intuitive, it’s easy to assume that education is unnecessary. Nothing can be farther from the truth.
Education is the key to any successful business.
First piece of advice is to make sure that you understand your local laws around tarot. Secondly, make sure that you know your local requirements around starting a business. Third, make sure that you do everything legally.
Apply for a business license. Register your business. Fill out all the required paperwork. Obtain liability insurance. File your taxes. Etc.
I can’t even begin to tell you how many tarot readers are operating illegally because they don’t take it seriously. It demeans the entire industry.
Once you educate yourself on the business aspects, educate yourself on your craft.
