We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cathy Williamson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cathy below.
Cathy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I have always loved blogs and read many (mostly fashion) when blogging first emerged. I remember looking at blogs in 2013 and wondering why there wasn’t a fashion blog for women over 50. There were a few, but they were not what I would say would be inspiring for women over 50.
I decided to start one without knowing how to do it. I asked a young friend with a blog to mentor me and help me get it going. I remember feeling like I was learning a foreign language. I asked many questions and wrote down all the instructions to get into the Blogger platform. I couldn’t remember how to upload the photos or do many other things.
With a lot of patience and practice, I finally got the hang of it and have been doing it for over ten years!

Cathy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have a blog called, The Middle Page. I focus on fashion (primarily), beauty, and lifestyle for women over the age of fifty. Honestly, I am not an expert on any of it; I just know what I like and, hopefully, inspire women to take risks with fashion as they get older. I like to describe my style as “classic with a twist”. I don’t think you have to follow certain rules when you get older (regarding style). I think you can wear what you want as long as it makes you feel good!
I am a wife, mother (of 3), and grandmother (of 4), and I live in Dallas, Texas. I was diagnosed in 2013 with an aggressive form of breast cancer called Triple Negative. I am a huge advocate of reminding women to get their mammograms and check themselves. I feel it a privileged to be able to help women going through breast cancer.

Have you ever had to pivot?
In 2012, I started a rainwear line. I am not a designer and had no idea how to do it, but with the help of my daughter-in-law, we figured it out and started manufacturing them. Things were going well for us until she got pregnant, and I got diagnosed with breast cancer. We had to fold the business, and that’s when I started my blog.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson on folding my rainwear business was that God had something more important for me to do. The diagnosis of breast cancer was so scary, but through my blog, I was able to help (and still do) other women going through the same thing.
