We recently connected with Cathie Cain, MHt., SGM and have shared our conversation below.
Cathie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Before I became a Clinical and Transpersonal Hypnotherapist and Master Hypnotist in 2008, I was a mortgage banker for 20 years. It was a very interesting thing that I was a mortgage banker, because I don’t strike most people as the kind of person who likes to crunch numbers…in fact, I come across quite the opposite, which is probably why I did so well. I wasn’t the typical sales person you would expect in a loan officer position.
People could instinctively know that they could trust me, and that I was going to give them a more than fair deal. My mortgage clients also felt comfortable enough to confide in me quite often, which I never solicited, but was subjected to, nonetheless. I would hear the craziest stories, and be a shoulder to cry on and a sympathetic ear to listen. People just sensed that I was a natural counselor…
However, as wonderful as I felt knowing that the clients who did business with me were getting a great mortgage rate, and also personal service that was genuinely about their best interest, it just wasn’t fulfilling enough for me…something was missing.
As you can imagine, a career in the mortgage industry brought with it a lot a wealth, but it also brought a lot of stress…a LOT of stress. I had started smoking cigarettes at the age of 16, and by the time I entered the mortgage industry in my early twenties, I was a solid pack a day or more smoker.
My habit hit its zenith early 2007, and I turned to hypnosis to help me end that useless habit. It worked like a charm, so I decided to utilize hypnotherapy to help me cope with the stress of my job…it, too, worked like a charm. After my hypnosis sessions, I realized that I was already hypnotizing people, but for an interest rate that was helping some giant banking entity. I was selling people money for money, and what I realized is that I would rather be selling people they’re own self-worth….
So, in 2008 I got certified in Clinical and Transpersonal Hypnotherapy by the National Guild of Hypnotists, The International Medical & Dental Hypnotherapy Assoc., and The National Assoc. of Transpersonal Hypnotherapy, opened my hypnotherapy practice, and in 2010 retired from the mortgage industry…and thus another Light Worker was born!

Cathie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! I’m Cathie Cain, and I’m a Certified Clinical and Transpersonal Hypnotherapist and Master Hypnotist. I’ve been helping people heal and transform their lives through my hypno-therapeutic program since 2009.
I’m a Clinical Hypnotherapist as in I help clients reprogram their subconscious mind and end unwanted habits such as smoking, over-drinking, over-eating, fears and phobias, nail biting, etc…and it’s especially effective in transforming obsessive negative or critical thinking. I have found that using hypnosis for behavior and thought modification to be the most transformative resource for success and general well-being.
I’m a Transpersonal Hypnotherapist as in I help clients get out of their own way so they can level up and live their best lives. It’s about creating a safe space for allowing personal and spiritual growth, and for releasing the heavy energy of past trauma in a safe, non- invasive way…when you take your garbage to the curb, you don’t undo the twist-tie and stick you face in the bag, right? No, you tie it up and take it to the curb, and the nice people take it away…it’s the same with the hypno-therapeutic process…very subtle and in the back-ground, yet highly effective and incredibly far-reaching and profound.
I’m most proud of how many lives I’ve help transform in such diverse and meaningful ways…like taking a client from self-loathing and unhappy to happy, healthy and whole. I’ve helped life-long smokers finally give their lungs a break and stop smoking, I’ve helped people who have suffered from child-hood abuse or were the victims of a crime find genuine peace. I’ve helped women too stressed to get pregnant calm down long enough for their body to receive their partner’s seed, and I’ve helped a Vietnam Veteran who suffered from night-terrors for 50 years finally get a good night’s sleep…that one in particular really pulls on my heartstrings…I’m so deeply honored to be doing what I do, truly!!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2020, after 25 years being married to an abusive man, we finally ended our crummy marriage, sold our home, and I made the radical decision to move me, my two 4 year old Australian Shepherds and my hypnotherapy practice from Frederick, Maryland to Virginia Beach, Virginia.
I’ve always wanted to live by the ocean, plus I didn’t have any memories with my ex in Virginia Beach, which was greatly needed in order for me to heal. I needed a whole new life in a whole new place. So, I took an intuitive leap of faith to begin a new life and restarted everything from scratch…including my business…in a completely different market…during a time in our history that we’re still trying to figure out.
It’s taken a lot of courage to overcome some of the pitfalls and obstacles I’ve come up against in the 2+ years I’ve been in Virginia Beach, but I stay focused my desired outcome and on my purpose; to help people release their trauma and raise their vibration, raise their level of love for themselves and others, and be happy…because when people are happy and emitting Love, the frequency of the planet heals…and that’s good for us all!
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
There are at least 2 things I can think of that are crucial in being not just a good Hypnotherapist, but an effective Hypnotherapy:
1.) Life experience. If I were to jump right into Hypnotherapy right out of college, even with the best of intentions, I probably would have done more unintentional damage than I could imagine. I was in my mid-40’s when I got certified as a Hypnotherapist ~ after learning some hard adult lessons about life, and 25 years in the workforce as a mortgage banker learning about human behavior and emotions in the real world. Now I have the experience, emotional maturity and intellectual resources to be of actual benefit to someone needing the best guidance, and can help deliver them to their desired outcome.
2.) Protect your own energy. We don’t realize then in working with others, especially in a healing capacity, we can literally take on someone else’s low-vibing or negative energy. This will ultimately lead the practitioner to burnout. I’ve learned to visualize a protective energetic shield surrounding me at all times, which deflects other people’s energies. Even after a session that is rather heavy emotionally, I still feel light and grounded. Self-care is of the utmost importance, and our energy body should never be overlooked or ignored…it’s the source that enables us to be an infinite creative resource and to facilitate holding a healing space for others.
