We were lucky to catch up with Catherine Pistone recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Catherine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Thank you so much for the invitation. One of the most meaningful projects I have had the pleasure of working on in my art career was painting my first mural, a two-story building for a non-profit food pantry, serving families in need.
I have always believed in manifesting my own journey. This project was a testament to my creative vision. My husband and I were visiting one evening and he asked me about my creative goals for the year, my response was, ‘I want to do something different, something Big… I want to paint a mural’. Three days later I was approached with the opportunity to just that!
While living on a lift for a month creating this extra-large painting was exhilarating, meeting the people of the neighborhood, building
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Art has an amazing way of connecting us. It unites us from different backgrounds and from all over the world. Art has a way of shifting something inside you when you visit that empowering exhibit at the art museum, or step into a hip downtown gallery. Think about the excitement you feel when you spot a colorful mural down the street, or when you stroll your favorite art festival. It changes neighborhoods, and it changes YOU.
Traveling to new places, experiencing other cultures, their art, their traditions… It fills you up. It brings us together. It inspires us to be our best selves.
Awesome, right? This is my mission, I want you to pass that good feeling on!
I’m Catherine Pistone, a Colorado-based artist.
I believe in feeling inspired and sharing happiness, by creating art I invite you to participate.
I want to make sure you live your best life; one where colorful art surrounds you on a daily basis. My art is a celebration of color, an outward expression of emotion – it’s happy, it’s approachable.
An abstract/figurative inspired painter and muralist I’m currently craving the next oversized painting. I love to paint BIG! – colorful murals that lift you up, and enhances the community, bold canvases that grace the walls of trendy restaurants, and happy works of art that elevate the good feelings in your home.
A self-proclaimed art and design magazine junkie, I am also an enthusiastic cook, sangria maker, and Toll-House cookie baker, who enjoys hiking with my hubby, and Lucy our rescue pup, toodeling around town in Lily, our vintage VW, gathering with friends and family, and staying connected to the creative community.
Murals in both Denver and Boulder, I also exhibit my work from my studio and throughout the Boulder/Denver area.
My paintings can be found in homes across the country, collected by lovely clients who I am now pleased to call friends.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Not everyone understands what you do as an artist. Many non-creatives think your work is just a hobby. For most creatives I think being an artist is in your DNA, you don’t know how to ‘do’ or ‘be’ anything else. As a working professional it’s a job that is not just 9am-5pm. It is a career with many rewards, however it takes sacrifice, long hours, dedication, and discipline.
As an artist we think about our studio practice ALL the time. Always a student, it is a life of learning new techniques, researching and reading, feeling inspired by others and the natural world around us, and finding ways to pivot and adjust, often spending long hours on other areas of administrative tasks, building an audience, writing proposals and grants, prepping and attending art shows, and finding new markets and collectors, just to name a few.
Most would say it’s a career gifted to you from an early age, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Aside from time spent in the studio, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is bringing people together through my art; meeting collectors, hearing their stories, and learning about how my work resonates with them. My mission is always about the viewer, creating an elevated space, one that will make them feel uplifted and happy for years to come.
