Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Catherine Gray. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Catherine , appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Starting any business or endeavor is taking a risk. When I decided to raise funding for my movie Show Her The Money – it was a risk.
But if you have a vision and feel it’s a calling or your purpose on the planet – then you have to go for it.
I thought, no one is telling this story in a film industry about the underfunding of women in venture capital and someone has to create an engaging yet educational film about this topic.
I do believe it is film and television that changes culture.
I know I had to find like minded people who agreed with this idea.
So I took a year and a half of my time to take the risk of raising those funds for this project to happen- and it did!
I raised over a million dollars to produce the film and to create a 50 city grassroots tour to help women learn about venture capital and why it is important for them to know about this lucrative investment class and how to invest in it. And to be aware that more women than ever in history are starting their own venture capital funds to fund women, BiPoc and lgbtq.
With women getting only 2% of all venture capital funds- which is about 250 billion dollars a year- and men getting the other 98%- I knew I had to take the risk of raising monies to fund this endeavor.
And I know it is important to the future of women and for all people. This sector strongly influences what products and services will exist in the future.
My Ted Talk, Fund Women-Save the World talks about how people tend to invest in people they identify with.
That’s why it is important that the decision makers deciding who gets the funding need to consist of women, BiPoc and lgbtq+ people.
And with women coming into trillions of dollars in the coming decade- I knew this was the time to take the risk on this film project and grassroots movement to make them aware of how they can be a catalyst to change and impact the future for generations to come!

Catherine , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I created She Angel Investors as a multi media platform to connect women entrepreneurs with funders and funding resources. Our platform includes several facets:
1- Our movie Show Her The Money that we are taking on a 50 city grassroots tour to start a movement that will help move the needle on women getting only 2 % of venture capital.
2- Our Invest in Her podcast that is filled with knowledge, wisdom and information from experts in funding, investors, and women entrepreneurs.
3- Our ecourse called 6 Ways to Fund your business which is available on our website.
4- Events we create or collaborate on that bring connections and resources to our community.
5- Speaking engagements where I have opportunities to speak about how the Super Power of Connecting leads to fundraising success.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Funding my film project was a multi faceted endeavor. First I created an LLC to bring in angel investors. Then I aligned with a 501 (c) 3 fiscal sponsor to also create a non profit fundraiser for the project. And then lastly developed a deck to bring sponsors onboard.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Resilience and grit is really what it takes to be an entrepreneur or fundraiser. You will hear way more no’s than yes’s and you have to keep going.
My friend Andrea Quinn – who puts on a phenomenal workshop called the Quinnessentials– teaches women to learn how to ask and how to receive. Men are better at this because of the way our culture raises girls differently than males with regard to confidence and asking/recieving.
The bottom line is- if you get a no- keep going – and when someone is your people and aligned with your thinking – they will get your vision and say yes! Count me in!
You will find them out there. It just takes resilience and determination.
And knowing that you are asking for a cause that is greater than yourself will help you to be fearless about asking for funding.
