We recently connected with Catalina Laverde and have shared our conversation below.
Catalina, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new venture – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
Wow! this was tough. I decided to open up my business account in January. I began posting photos I had taken of my friends. I also reached out to people for free pictures. I was posting at least twice a week with deals but nothing was coming in, not even inquiries, but I didn’t give up. I continued doing this for a little over 9 months until someone finally reached out and I completed my first photoshoot. After this one, I didn’t have another client until 3 months later, but I kept going. It wasn’t until a little over a year that my business became known and bookings were happening at least once a month.

Catalina, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Catalina Laverde. I am a part-time photographer and a full-time Behavior Analyst working with children under the Autism Spectrum. My role as a photographer started in 2017 when I decided it was time to start my own business doing something I enjoyed while I was in school pursuing my Behavior Analytic career and working full time as a therapist. Taking pictures is a hobby I had since I was a little girl and my love for photography was what helped me make the decision of opening up my own photography business. I am proud to say I never gave up although it was tough at first to get started.
I photograph couples, maternity, self-portraits, children, family portraits and more.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Every person reaches out to receive not only great pictures but also a great experience. Taking pictures is not a job to me, I take it seriously. I love to hear that they loved my work and I am always open to feedback if there’s any. I am capturing moments in their life that are valuable to them and I respect it by providing the best experience I can and the best pictures possible for them.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I love to work with children, couples, families, you name it! The best source of new clients has recently been referred by previous clients which I am grateful for, this means they loved what they received.
