We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cat Thompson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cat below.
Alright, Cat thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be an artist. I was completely fascinated by all things music related; from singing, playing instruments, dancing and creating little tunes, I couldn’t get enough of it. The local music store had a player piano (self-playing piano) at the front and every time we walked past, I would point at the moving keys and exclaim, “Look! There’s a ghost playing the piano!” I was always so excited to go past the music store and would run my little fingers over the moving keys and marvel at the magic.
Cat, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Cat Thompson and I am a female recording artist, songwriter and producer. I have had the pleasure of working with artists, songwriters, DJ’s and producers from different parts of the world. Music is a wonderful way to connect with people and each new project brings a new and unique creative experience. You can find my music on streaming platforms under my artist name Cat Thompson or you can check out my music and videos via my website: www.catthompson.com
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When I was much younger, I was told by a former manager that there are clear roles in the music industry. He said my role was to just be the artist. I was told to focus on my art and not worry about the business side of things. He said that he would take care that. I was very young and didn’t know better but as I learnt more about the music industry, I realised how wrong that advice was. Like every other industry, the music business is a business and it’s important to understand how it works so that you get paid correctly for your creative work. Brushing up on the basics like copyright law as well as how your royalties are collected is a great way to start.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
There are so many rewarding aspects to being an artist/creative. I love being able to share my love and passion of music with an audience. I love it when someone reaches out and tells me that a song I have written has made them happy or the song was able to touch them in a special way. Music connects us and it’s such an honour to be able to share my passion with other people. There may be someone on the other side of the world or even just down the road, who might not be having such a good day and if my music makes their day a little brighter then it makes all the more worth it.
