Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cat Pierce. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cat, appreciate you joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I have been earning a living from my creative ventures for the past 25 years. My mother was a painter and my father was in a band and they homeschooled me and my siblings so we were immersed in creative energy since childhood. My sister and I were in a band called The Pierces. We got a record deal in our late teens and went on to put out 5 albums. We toured all over the world opened for Coldplay Elton John and Emmylou Harris. We earned a good living until music streaming dried up a lot of the industry money. It became clear that we’d have to supplement with other ventures, so I created a hand drawn Tarot Deck and started a beauty line. These were both passions of mine, so it was almost a blessing that I was pushed to find other ways to make money. I’ve been able to do all that I’ve done by finding like-minded people online, in Facebook groups, and chat rooms. I was able to figure out how to self publish my Tarot Deck because I found a group of women who were doing the same thing and we all shared information and tips. It was really incredible. Then Hay House offered me a publishing deal and that allowed me more time to expand my beauty line, OMEN. It sounds like a lot but this all unfolded over a couple of decades. I think the key is just to keep pushing forward with everything you want to do. It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you just put a little bit of work towards your goal every day.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was always interested in beauty products, and when I was struggling to get pregnant a few years ago, my interest turned towards clean beauty. I started mixing my own face oil based on my skins needs, and I created a lip balm with the most incredible texture. I started giving my products to friends and family and everyone loved it and encouraged me to start my own brand. Everything in the line is handcrafted by me….I make the products, I design the labels and packaging, and I create the ads for the line. It’s a lot of work, but it’s super creative and rewarding. And I love that I’m putting out clean products that are predominantly natural and still incredibly effective.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think giving gifts that are handcrafted by local artists is a really wonderful way to support creators. That way you’re helping small businesses and giving gifts that are far more special than something mass produced. Also if you see musicians that you love with a side hustle, buy whatever they’re making! The music biz is rough these days.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The book Time Warrior by Steve Chandler changed my life. I used to procrastinate and was borderline lazy. That book whipped me into shape. I have it in audio form and I pop on my headphones and listen to it and get to work whenever I need a productivity boost.
