We recently connected with Cat Parks and have shared our conversation below.
Cat , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
It started last 2020 when I realized that a lot of women who recently moved to LA are having a hard time making friends and building genuine connections. I decided to do something about it by creating a private FB community group and inviting women who are interested in making new friends, attending workshops, and supporting each other. From there, the group organically grew and has now more than 1,000 members. Grl Pwr LA offers a wide variety of workshops and membership services, which are open to women of all backgrounds, that will leave you feeling inspired and confident while having a strong sense of community whether or not you’re new to LA or the city.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Yes, of course! There is so much power in community. Often times, women feel like they’re alone when they relocate to a new city or find themselves, pursuing a new business endeavor. Grl Pwr LA was created to help women get to where they want to be by supporting one another. We believe in the power of sisterhood and that there is no need to compete against each other. We are committed to helping women accomplish their goals by providing accessible resources, workshops, and mentorship. Instead of just focusing on how to make everyone successful, Grl Pwr LA also aims to help women find genuine connections and authentic friendships with like-minded women so that they would never feel alone along their journey of accomplishing their goals.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yes, during the pandemic in 2020 we sadly had to place a hold on all of our in person events. We knew we wanted to utilize the power of our community to help our community members feel more connected during such a dark time. Instead of placing all of our programming on hold, we made a pivot and launched our first ever virtual mentorship program. Now, since things are a lot better even though we have resumed our events our virtual mentorship has expanded with the launch of our hybrid social club that connects our members whether they live in Los Angeles or not seeking accountability, connection, and mentorship for aspiring female entrepreneurs as well as women looking to make new friends in Los Angeles.

Any advice for managing a team?
As a non profit founder, it’s so important to have good communication. This looks like having the proper onboarding that gives new team members clear expectations and guidelines as well as what benefits you are able to provide. If you think about your favorite job experience it probably didn’t have much to do with what you did but how what you did and others made you feel. I always strive to recognize and show my board members how much I appreciate them while also creating healthy lines of communication during the onboarding process and moving forward.
