We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cat Delp a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cat, appreciate you joining us today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
The aesthetic business is fun, making people look better and feel better about themselves is always gratifying. But I never expected it to unquestionably touch someone’s life. A woman came in and asked if we could help her, as she had a “gummy smile”. This is where excessive upper gum tissue is visible with a smile. In her case it was severe, and had impacted her her whole life. She told me as a young girl she had not ever smiled in photos, and would cover her mouth in embarrassment if she laughed. In the pictures she was self-conscious and always standing in the back.
We have a Botox procedure to help this and a few minutes later she was out the door, waiting for it to take effect.
When she returned in follow up she paused at the door, looked at me, and her eyes filled with tears. She said for the first time that she could remember she could smile without covering her mouth. She was grinning in pictures. She loved her smile, Loved laughing. Loved being free of something that had made her think of herself as flawed. She of course was beautiful before her procedure, but to do something that helped her see that made me feel as happy as she looked, standing there smiling at me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
There are many Med Spas. My success comes from approaching this as a client rather than an owner. What do I want for myself? To feel good and look great. Pampered. Taken care of. And I want to have it all! From the latest fillers, neurotoxins and laser treatments. We offer skin care including PRP and exosomes. We take care of you with weight loss treatments, bioidentical hormone pellets and IV therapy. These are all things I want and use so I can be knowledgeable at a personal level.
Throughout this growth I wanted the business to reflect my sense of humor and my love of what I do, so some of my best moments are when clients say “I follow your posts, you make me laugh!”
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
It sounds cliche, but authenticity is the most important part of my business. My advertising gives my customers insight on who I really am, and they respond to that. Whenever there is an opportunity to get personal, I use it to attract customers that respond to my sense of humor, my tastes and my creativity. This creates relationships that we truly enjoy and can maintain. If you like what I am putting out there you will like my business because it is me.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
As everyone knows, a business lives or dies by your team. Advice? Get to know them. Listen. The Connie Brockway quote “Find our what people want to do, then tell them to do it” is relevant. We had a particularly busy week. In a good way, but it was stressful. We got massage gift certificates to a local business for the staff to recognize a big week.
Spending time with my team is time I feel is well spent. I like my team. The laughter that you hear coming from our rooms as we all do reels is sincere and a great part of my day. I feel that being who I really am attracts the right team members as well as great clients.
