We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cassie Marozsan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cassie below.
Cassie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Ten years ago I was sitting in county jail because I was addicted to opiates and doing some pretty questionable things with my life. I violated probation and was sentenced to three months in county jail and three months in a county in house rehabilitation center. All I had was time to think about what I wanted in life. County was boring and repetitive but when I got to the rehabilitation part I had a lot more options to fill up my hours and hours of free time. I met some pretty cool women in there that had artistic abilities so I would sit with them and learn to do what they were doing with paper and colored pencils. I learned how to do the-dye, shade and put on some pretty realistic 80’s cover band make up all with crayola commissary colored pencils. I would draw all night, every day for close to three months so when I got out and went to live amongst the normal people again, the first stop I made was to get drawing supplies and I haven’t stopped since. The monster art also comes from county because we only had one television for twenty plus women so ever morning Monday through Friday we watched three hours of supernatural and I started drawing the monsters.
Cassie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I became interested in the monster art world about five years ago when I attended Cryptid Con in Kentucky. I walked around for two days looking at everyone’s art amazed how there were so many depictions of the same creature. I became hooked then and have yet to stop drawing.
I started off trying everything. Dollar tree crafts, hobby lobby crafts, colored pencils, oils, watercolors, acrylics but I settled on Posca markers on canvas. I love how everything turns out when it’s completed and I can fix my mistakes easily.
Drawings is a complete stress reliever for me and with the amount of work I put out for shows and commissions, I can say I am extremely happy all the time right now. I have a day job as a server and also have houses to renovate after work so I’m drawing from when I get home until I physically cannot open my eyes any longer. The more and more shows I get accepted into the more art I get to create.
My shop is called Cassie’s Land because it’s everything that goes on in my head put down on canvas. Recently my mom started making giant Mothman and giant Bigfoot feet. I call the Mothman Emotional Support Creatures, they have an eight foot wingspans and wrap around your shoulders then connect around the front at the tips of the wings so it won’t fall off of you. The Bigfoot foot are a set of oversized furry pillows that are extremely soft with different toe nail colors in each set.
I also do commissions for people who want something specific. My prices aren’t high because it’s something that I love doing for fun and I want people to be able to buy something that will make them happy every time the look at it.
I’m most proud of actually putting my work out there. It was a little rough in the beginning but as I look back on my own work even I can see the major improvement. When people tell you “practice makes perfect”, even though you are always practicing, believe them because the improvement will be there.
I have met so many new people that have became my really close friends at all the events I go to. I do Oddmall Ohio events, punk rock flea markets, Cleveland haunt club events and I have recently been accepted to sell my work in a store, Middle Room Haunted Experience. The store is amazing and offers artists a great opportunity to have their work set up in their unique space which also offers, haunted house on site, trivia night, event room, and different movie and writing opportunities.
Speaking of writing opportunities I am apart of a horror anthology called “Dark Village”. It is composed of 27 different authors that all have a short horror themed story. Mine is called “Don’t eat the Yellow Snow” and is a psychological thriller. Hopefully there will be more to come in the writing department from me soon.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
The biggest struggle for non-creatives to understand for me is why I choose to draw monsters or scary things when there are so many pretty things I can draw. My answer to that is, I think horror art is beautiful. I love the dark colors, black, blue, gray, purple, etc… but I also loves color, so I usually use some type of fluorescent color to make my art stand out. It makes it’s pretty to me and stands out in my eyes. I can look at flowers and draw them all day long but to get into somebodies head and watch them create something using their imagination is beautiful.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is a hard thing to tackle. The algorithms screw you up sometimes. You can be getting hundreds of likes one week then the next week you get two likes. Don’t sweat it. The way I built up my social media was by following artists I meet at events, sharing their work and shouting them out when I purchase their pieces. People in this community won’t hesitate to do the same for you. Also, hashtags. Use whatever hashtag you can think of when starting that relates to your piece. You want your work to be seen by as many people as possible so make sure something you tag gets them to see it on their feed.
