We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cassie Howard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cassie below.
Hi Cassie, thanks for joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
My business unexpectedly began while I was in high school. I say unexpectedly, because I wasn’t trying to start a business! I just loved taking pictures, was excited to share my work, and that work seemed to resonate with people, so they started hiring me. As graduation neared, my passion for photography was continuing to grow. I felt a lot of uncertainty about what I should do next. Should I attend a 4-year college, perhaps study photography at an arts school, or just focus on growing my business? Ultimately, I decide to enroll at Purdue University and get a degree in marketing and a certificate of entrepreneurship. While in college, I continued to do photography on side, all while doing other things like holding leadership positions on campus, maintaining my grades, studying abroad for a semester, and even having a marketing internship at a large pharmaceutical company. While the growth of my business was slow during that time, it was steady. So while my peers were searching for jobs in the corporate world, I was able to go full-time with my business right after graduation. It was definitely difficult balancing being a student as well as a business owner for all those years and I often doubted my decision (especially during calculus class!). Looking back though, I wouldn’t change a thing. The practical and personal skills I obtained in college gave me the knowledge I needed to run a sustainable business for the past 4 years!
Cassie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, I’m Cassie! I’m a cat mom, adventure enthusiast, red wine lover, and wedding photographer. While I’m currently based in Fort Worth, Texas, I have the honor of traveling all over the world to capture magnificent love stories. I would describe my photographic style as natural, fun, and intentional. It’s super important to me to capture more than just poses or pretty pictures. Instead, I aim to evoke the feeling behind what I’m shooting. It’s the energetic, emotional, real moments that inspire me.
I’m super proud of the client experience that I’ve created over the years. One comment I hear from clients a lot is that they felt super comfortable in front of the camera. That is one of the greatest compliments to me because I really cater my shooting style to each of my couples. I want their own individual personalities to breathe and fill each photo. I believe those are the kind of images that stand the test of time.
So if you’re looking for a photographer who wants to get to know you and your story, is totally down for an adventure, and will get some bomb pictures from it all, then I’m your girl!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Consistently serving my clients well! Whether that’s being a resource for them during the planning process, going beyond my job title to do make their wedding day amazing, or delivering more than the promised amount of images in their gallery. Building trust is key, especially in the wedding industry. After all of these years, I still get most of my clients by word of mouth. The best gift a small business can receive is a rave review. My clients are absolutely amazing at this and I’m so thankful for their continued support, even after their wedding day is over and their photos are delivered.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of my job is getting to make time stand still with a photo. Especially at weddings, moments happen so quickly and then they’re gone forever. Whether it’s mom wiping away a tear during the ceremony, or someone splitting their pants on the dance floor, every moment is fleeting!
