We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cassie Duncan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cassie below.
Cassie, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
To learn stand-up comedy means just doing it. You can practice your jokes in your apartment (which I do) but you don’t know if they’re funny until you do them on stage. So stand-up is all about getting to the open-mics and also watch other comics and take notes. Honestly I don’t know if there was anything I could have done to speed up the learning process. It’s all about doing it as much as you can. Most essential skills are being able to read a room and adapt to it as well as time management with your bits. On top of…being funny. But that goes without saying. The only obstacles in my way was my own anxious mind over-thinking everything.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a stand-up comedian from Kansas City. I’m also a trans-woman and you’ll get plenty of jokes about my experience as a trans person but I do also like to focus on other subjects as well in my act. Right now I couldn’t be more proud of traveling outside of Kansas City to do comedy like South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa. It’s proof that I can impress hosts outside of my home city and make crowds that have no idea who I am laugh. I am also so proud to have hosted for Jay Jurden and Amber Autry at the Comedy Club of Kansas City!
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Show up to the shows! That’s the best way you can support a comic. And if you have a little extra money, buy their merch! But if you can’t spend the money, like and share their content on social media. Trust me. If you follow them, there will be plenty of posts to share.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Getting a room full of people to laugh at material you wrote is one of the best feelings in the world and it never gets old! You sit in your apartment and write these jokes and you have no idea if they are funny so when you get a room roaring at something you came up with, it’s the most rewarding feeling!
