We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cassidy Longcrier. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cassidy below.
Cassidy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Along with taking care of clients, taking care of our team is one of the most important things we can do as leaders. Looking back on your journey, did you have a boss that was really great? Maybe you can tell us about that boss and what made them a wonderful person to work for?
Hands down, Ben and Justin Hudgins and their manager Alissia Esqueda.
I started my hair career their salon, Novak Hair Studios, in 2019 and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Their love for our industry is unmatched. They wanted to change the hustle culture in our industry, and provide a chance for stylist to excel at their craft while having boundaries for themselves and their business.
I have watched Ben and Justin face some of the biggest adversities and hardships in the part few years and overcome every one of them with dignity and grace. Alissia runs the day to day operations at Novak, and she puts her heart and soul into it. She truly cares about the staff, stylist and clients and I really think you can feel that the moment you step into the building.
My time spent at Novak is what set me up for the opportunity to open up my own space, and I’m so thankful for the beautiful lessons learned.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
You can normally find me painting hair, empowering women or living my best life with my new little family. My newest roles in life are being a wife and new momma to my precious baby girl, Hazel Grace. I fell into the hair industry almost 5 years ago and have LOVED every bit of it.
One of my biggest goals in life is to change the stigma of going to a trade school. I can’t lie, a few years ago I was part of the problem. I was embarrassed to tell people when I enrolled in cosmetology school— I remember being ashamed and not even knowing why. I had grown up watching my aunt have an incredibly successful career doing hair and knew she was killin’ it, but I had NO clue that there are thousands of other badass ladies all over the world making 6, even 7, figure incomes doing something that they love while having the freedom to work for themselves.
Being a busy mama myself, I understand how important time is to most of my clients. I know how sacred our self-care is, and that’s why I focused my entire experience on delivering results that work with your lifestyle and budget accompanied by products that help maintain in between! I specialize in healthy, lived-in blondes and brondes, and have a l o v e for education.
I recently partnered up with two of the most talented babes I know and opened up our own little slice of Heaven in Downtown Weatherford, TX— Sustainable Soul Salon + Refillery! We’re a one stop shop where you can go to get a kick ass hair color, refill your cleaning supplies + home goods to ditch single use products, and pick up cute gift for an event you’ve got this weekend, or just to treat yourself!
A refillery is a shopping experience that allows you to fill + refill your favorite toiletries, beauty products, and cleaning supplies. You can bring your own bottle/container or shop from our in-store Bottle Bar!
At Sustainable Soul we are passionate about helping the average consumer make simple sustainable swaps to lessen their impact on the environment, and we have a whole lotta fun along the way! We know that sometimes recycling and living an eco conscious lifestyle can be a little intimidating, but don’t worry— we are 100% judgement free and love to learn and share ways we can all do our part in saving the amazing planet we live on! Every little bit counts.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Being raised by an incredibly hard working, single momma I learned to work for what I want from a young age. What took a lot longer to learn, or unlearn I guess you could say, is that there is a season for hustling and a season for rest. I was always running full speed at the ‘next big step’ in life, my career, everything. I wasn’t enjoying the current chapter, or acknowledging how hard I worked to get there.
Life is so precious and goes by way too fast. As cliché as it sounds, make sure to slow down and enjoy the ride.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think my ability to slow down to explain the process, and always being realistic with expectations is what set me apart from the majority of stylist. A lot of clients genuinely don’t understand why their hair can/can’t do something and don’t know how to take care of it. It’s our job to educate them, not shrug it off. My motto is always to under promise and over deliver— I would rather be realistic and then blow your expectations out of the park then get someone’s hopes and and miss the mark. It’s all about building trust and a real relationship with your clients.
