We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cassidy Garber. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cassidy below.
Hi Cassidy, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
As an aspiring Entrepreneur, I own, operate, and manage 3 different business all of which I am extremely passionate about. I had always felt a strong call towards being in a leadership position or role, and I’ve been able to put my skills to the test by exploring a few different avenues of business.
On top of pursuing my dreams of utilizing my extensive background in musical theater and performing arts to become a touring Musician/DJ, over the summer I decided to acquire my yoga teaching certification which has sent me on a journey of self discovery, as well as sparking a passion within me to help others heal. Both of these endeavors have been providing me with new opportunities for growth and forming new connections, as I’m consistently focused on growing my online reach and expanding my network in both fields.
As of recently I combined my 2 worlds and created the Sacred Sessions event series. We just held the first ever Sacred Sessions Sober Gathering in St. Petersburg, FL, and all of the feedback so far has been incredibly positive. I knew that this idea was going to be popular because there has been a gap in the market for a social daytime event centered on health and wellness combined with all of the fun elements that most people love about a nighttime event (music, vendors, food, etc.).
It was during COVID-19 2020 lockdown when everyone became isolated that I realized how vital the human connection actually is.This is why the vision for what Sacred Sessions is has continued to evolve. I know I wasn’t the only one feeling this way, and I felt there was a gap in the scene, a missing opportunity to connect on a deeper level with intention. I thought to myself, there have to be other people out there that are looking for a similar space whether that be at festivals or in my local community.
Our first official local event was a confirmation of this, as many attendees expressed how inspiring it was to be in a sober environment, and how this was unlike anything they’ve experienced before. There is a lot of excitement about it being a sober event specifically held during the day time. It’s nice to go for a late night out every once in a while, but it’s also nice to be able to see your friends vividly, have clearly understood conversations, and connect in a different space outside of a party environment.
My unique approach is to merge the worlds and networks I have extensive experience and connections in and innovate the way we know: Arts/Entertainment, Health/Wellness, and Lifestyle/Social Gatherings.
Cassidy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Music has always been a huge part of who I am. When I began to DJ taking side gigs at local kava bars while studying full-time in college, my music project (Alias: Sacred Snow) started to gain momentum and before I knew it I was receiving a management opportunity which helped propel me onto bigger stages and out of state festivals. When it comes to the music industry, it’s important to do something to differentiate yourself and help you stand out amongst the others. My brand is unique as I am one of the only female DJ’s that actually sings live during my sets, I produce my own music, I wear very distinct outfits/costumes when performing, and everything is under the snow/icy aesthetic. I’ve received a lot of compliments on how I’ve branded my music and myself as an artist. My music and performing have always been my passion, and to find success in a field I’m so passionate about has been extremely empowering.
Along with being in the entertainment industry and also being a young adult who actively seeks community community, I went ahead and took matters into my own hands by creating a space where people can come together at an interactive healing event, socialize and participate in engaging activities, and feel safe in a healthy, sober environment. There has to be balance to everything in life, and at Sacred Sessions we aim to provide our community an inclusive space to connect, empower, awaken, and heal. By combining fun elements like live music and vendors with informational workshops and yoga, people get a taste of trying different activities while learning something new along the way! A lot of people are already excited for the next one, and we are so thankful to be receiving the love and support from the Wakaan community and local Bay Area community that we have.
This has also been exciting to help promote that I am now teaching yoga to the connecting crowd/ market we are currently tapping into. It is one of my main goals to reach people with my music, events, and my yoga instruction services by building each following base through cross-promotional efforts.
How did you build your audience on social media?
The process of building my social media presence has been taken seriously over the course of the last 2 years. Here is what has helped me achieve the following I have today.
1. You choose what you represent online. For example, if you want to be perceived as professional, get professional headshots done for your profile picture instead of a selfie with bad lighting.
2. Connect. The more you interact with other people’s content, the more others will interact with with yours! I’m not sure if its psychology or science, but its only natural for others to feel more inclined to support what you’re doing if they see you supporting them. Leaving a comment takes .5 seconds and helps to boost their own algorithm as well as yours.
3. Be consistent. Posting 1 song every 2 years isn’t going to build your fanbase. I know that’s a dramatic example, but think of it like this. You could be the best music producer in the entire world, but if you never post what you do online, no one is ever going to hear it. As long as you are consistent in your craft and business, people want to see the behind the scenes work! Show the world what you do often, and be loud about it.
4. For those just starting out- often times the building process online can feel like screaming into the void. My best advice is just to fake it till you make it. Stay authentic to who you are and what your brand represents, but what I mean by that is even if you have 5 followers, act like you have 500. If you have 500, act and build content like you have 5000. If you have 5000, shoot for 50,000.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
They say who you know in the industry is everything, but it’s more about treating the people you know in the industry well and with consistent respect. Having people as references is a huge help for getting more work or bookings down the line. I know DJs who aren’t going to get booked again by certain companies because of how they treated staff. It doesn’t matter how popular or how desired a product or service is, there are more entertainers and people to hire out there that are respectful and take their job seriously.
It’s important to monitor what you post online because we live in a cancel culture society where what you say could be the end of your career even if you didn’t know realize at the time what you were saying/doing was offensive. If you do make a mistake in real life or online, it’s important to take the time to acknowledge it, take full accountability for it, and take any actions necessary to make up for it including stepping down from positions of power.
You are never above the law. Be a leader for others in your industry and lead by example. Move like someone is always watching, and this definitely isn’t meant to scare you. If anything I hope this inspires you to be fully aware of the image and words you allow to come out of you!
