We recently connected with Cassandra Flores and have shared our conversation below.
Cassandra , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
My passion for photography was sparked during a transformative trip to Mexico, a place I hadn’t visited in years due to being a DACA recipient. The vibrant colors, rich culture, and the deep emotional connection I felt overwhelmed me in the best ways. It was as if I was rediscovering my roots through the lens of my camera. Capturing the essence of Mexico, its people, and its landscapes became a way for me to reconnect with my heritage and preserve the memories of this profound journey. Photography allowed me to freeze those cherished moments in time, serving as a bridge between my past and present.I desired to continue this journey in my present residence, Houston, and it has evolved into a lifelong passion, constantly challenging my creative spirit and serving as a reminder of the beauty of my homeland no matter where I am.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name Cassandra Flores I am a Houston-based photographer with deep roots in Guadalajara, Mexico. My lens is dedicated to capturing the essence of cultural diversity. Since I was a young girl I loved the idea of capturing a moment forever. It wasn’t until I was 18 when I bought my first camera, it marked the beginning of a passion for photography. The ability to capture moments and express myself creatively captivated me right from the start. It was a simple purchase that ignited a deep love for the art of photography. It had been more of a passion until this last year in 2022 when I got to visit my homeland after many years of not being able to visit. I am now based in Houston, and I use my camera to tell powerful stories of culture, heritage, and identity. My photography is a bridge between two worlds, celebrating the multicultural tapestry of Houston while paying homage to my Mexican roots.
One of my most significant achievements in my artistic journey has been the honor of being published by various brands/platforms one of them being Color a La Mexicana, a platform that celebrates and showcases Mexican culture which I am a huge fan of. Additionally, I have had the privilege of taking on my first exhibit at the Mexican consulate, where I had the chance to share my work with a diverse and appreciative audience. Along the way, I have been fortunate to meet incredible individuals who share a deep belief in my artistic vision. These experiences I am very grateful for and have validated my dedication to my craft.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in Houston is the vibrant and diverse artistic community that thrives in the city. Houston offers a rich tapestry of cultures, backgrounds, and artistic expressions, creating a unique environment for collaboration and inspiration. The city’s support for the arts, through numerous galleries, museums, and events, provides creatives with opportunities to showcase their work and connect with a broad audience. Houston’s welcoming and inclusive atmosphere fosters creativity, enabling artists to explore their passions, push boundaries, and experiment with new ideas.
How did you build your audience on social media?
In my personal experience, collaborations with Houston local artist and models has helped me reach new audiences. Social media, particularly TikTok, have played a pivotal role in building my artistic presence, through TikTok I’ve truly flourished. For those starting a business on social media, it’s crucial to set clear goals, understand your audience, and choose the right platforms. Consistency in posting and the creation of high-quality, engaging content are essential. Active engagement with your audience, strategic hashtag use, and regular analysis of your performance should also be something you look into. Building relationships, staying informed about social media trends, and planning content in advance are key for long-term success. Lastly, patience is vital as building a strong social media presence takes time and persistence.
