We were lucky to catch up with Cassandra Daye recently and have shared our conversation below.
Cassandra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
One thing I think I do differently than most wedding photographers in my local field is focusing just as much on my client’s experience as their photos. I think that soft skills and personal aspects of this work has gotten lost in the past, so focusing on my couples, getting to know them, their story, spending time with them in advance makes such a difference not only in they experience they receive, but this also translates to their photos, since they quickly become very comfortable with me. Mastering not just taking beautiful photos, but the psychology of taking care of and serving out clients can make the biggest difference and really elevate everything for them.
Cassandra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Cassie of Cassandra Daye Photography. I offer both digital photography and Super 8 vintage format film video, as well as education for photographers. I began carrying my camera to concerts and taking photos of bands and friends, and eventually discovered a whole different type of photography that focused on movement and natural, candid moments over stiff, awkward poses. I immediately there myself into figuring out how to create these images, shooting as much as possible and eventually working for other photographers locally, figuring out the business piece by piece.
I think the experience I provide sets me apart from others. I pride myself on making my clients and couples feel comfortable with me, and therefore in front of the camera, and going above and beyond in all aspects to provide an experience throughout the process from inquiry to delivery that I myself would love to receive.
Beautiful photos are a given, but connecting with clients as you’re welcomed into the happiest moments of their lives and being responsible for capturing them forever is something I take very seriously and feel very lucky to do.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think our name is everything, so bringing kindness, thoughtfulness and consideration into everything we do goes a long way, especially when it can feel easy to be jaded and go through the motions. . One of the best parts of owning my own business has been instilling my own values into it, and for me, that means the golden rule. Treating others how you want to be treated. Whether it’s taking care of clients: anticipating their needs, wants, concerns, problems; going above and beyond to provide support, educate and empower them, or capturing and telling their story that feels true and authentic to them. Or with my team or fellow vendors in the field. I try to imbue compassion, kindness, and empathy into every interaction.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Instagram has been the biggest source of clients for me as well as word of mouth. Without this social media platform, I would not have found or connected with so many wonderful clients and fellow creatives. Sharing images and the stories of my clients has been a wonderful way to connect in a way that maybe a decade ago may not have been possible, but has allowed for a new generation of creatives to break into an industry in a very different way, and do it their way. Social media can have it’s cons, but for my business the pros vastly outweigh them.
