We were lucky to catch up with Cassandra Coho recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cassandra , thanks for joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
This particular question has captivated my attention, as I have recently come to realize how privileged I am to be surrounded by individuals who consistently demonstrate kindness towards me. Reflecting on this, I am compelled to acknowledge that the most impactful act of kindness I have experienced was the shift in my perspective on self-perception and the world around me.
At 27 years old, like many individuals, I did not have the most favorable upbringing. I navigated through life burying my traumas without awareness and operated in a survival mode from a young age. In my late teens to early 20s, I made regrettable decisions, mistreating friends and acquaintances who were close to me. I struggled with an overwhelming desire to please others, often at the expense of my own desires. During this period, I felt unloved by everyone, including myself. Consequently, I believed that I was unlovable by others. It was not until I found employment at a cosmetic company that I encountered a woman who would significantly impact my life and alter my perspective on self-worth and purpose.
She introduced me to the concept of unconditional love and proceeded to exemplify the true meaning of the term. To this day, she continues to provide me with unwavering support and encouragement. Her ability to recognize my pain before I could acknowledge it myself, and her subsequent demonstration of grace, knowledge, healing, empathy, joy, and most importantly, unconditional love, have undoubtedly been the most generous acts bestowed upon me.
As a result of her influence and guidance, I now incorporate unconditional love into all facets of my life. I have discovered greater fulfillment in my endeavors and have gained clarity on my purpose in life, all due to her demonstration of unconditional love.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a two-time published Afro-Indigenous professional makeup artist and emerging holistic esthetician based in Kansas City. My background is a mix of Black and Dine – Navajo Tribe heritage, originally hailing from Gallup, New Mexico. Growing up predominantly in Kansas, I am entirely self-taught in makeup artistry, having first delved into the craft during my high school years.
My journey as a makeup artist began organically, with friends recognizing my talent and suggesting that I expand beyond personal application to providing makeup services for others. It wasn’t until I enrolled in esthetic school that I grasped the potential to turn my passion into a professional career. Through my esthetic education, I gained a deep understanding of skin anatomy and the critical role of self-care in maintaining optimal mental and physical well-being.
Under the umbrella of COHO, my services include professional makeup application, creative direction, therapeutic beauty sessions, and personalized makeup tutorials with an emphasis on skin preparation. I am thrilled to announce that skincare services will soon be integrated into my offerings, further enhancing the holistic approach to beauty that I advocate.
Among my proudest accomplishments is the insight I have gained into myself through interactions with clients. Every individual I work with imparts valuable lessons on intentionality and self-love, reinforcing the profound fulfillment that comes from infusing creativity with heartfelt dedication. The transformative power of artistry and conscious effort resonates deeply within me, propelling me forward on my journey toward self-discovery and professional growth.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
One of the most successful methods for expanding my client base is through a commitment to transparency while remaining mindful of my clients’ specific needs. This entails active networking, such as participation in community events and collaborations with fellow artists in the local area.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
One factor that I believe contributed to establishing my credibility as a professional makeup artist is the importance of trust, embracing and overcoming fears, and staying true to my authentic self.
However, it is likely that my perspective may evolve over time. As I continue to explore the impact of my reputation on my brand, I am continually learning and growing. In my opinion, attracting the right clientele hinges on being deliberate and intentional in representing your brand and developing a clear understanding of what it stands for.
