We recently connected with Cassandra Bruington and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Cassandra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I want my legacy to be a legacy of personal growth and helping others to grow. There is so much beauty in the journey of life and I’ve learned that every milestone, challenge, and new discovery is a lesson that can be shared with someone else. In 2017, I wrote a book called “Grow” and that changed my mindset. I reflected on all of the ways my life circumstances had added to my growth and development. I am a better mother, daughter, sister, and friend because I embrace a life of growth and encourage, teach, and inspire others to do the same. I started a business, Supplemental Education LLC where our primary goal is to ensure academic, social, and emotional growth. I activate others around me to confidently conquer their wildest dreams. My legacy will be one that extends beyond my family to my friends, loved ones, and hopefully you reading this!

Have you ever had to pivot?
The life of a business owner is full of pivots. I remember launching my business and hosting virtual tutoring webinars online to recruit my team. As a new mom at the time, I had my newborn wrapped on my chest as I spoke to men and women around the world about the opportunity to join my business. My pivot was adopting a new mindset. I launched Supplemental Education in July of 2020, a time when the effects of COVID-19 were still new. Education was changing and so were the ways in which we educate students. My pivot came when I realized I was a part of my target audience. I was a professional, now a parent, and I wanted options to support my family as I built legacy. Rather than considering how it might look to have my son on camera with me, I embraced that this new role as a mom was a major part of my shift to create the answer to a problem I knew intimately. Educators and parents need options. With nearly two-thirds of U.S. students are unable to read at grade level children were failing in our education system and COVID-19 threatened the already fragile system of learning. I pivoted from working within the system to supplementing it through launching my business. I hired tutors, created a program, and we partnered with parents to ensure student success academically, socially, and emotionally.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve always embraced the idea that you fail forward to success. The idea sounded good. As a business owner, I am living this principle. I had to unlearn perfectionism, procrastination, and asking permission. I now know that perfect is the enemy of complete. Some things just need to be finished. With the feedback from a completed project, I can move forward and create something even better. Procrastination kills good ideas. I knew I couldn’t wait on launching my business. I jumped into action literally 3 weeks after having my son. I didn’t wait because I understood the benefits my program would have for students, parents, and tutors. There are many moments in my business where I could delay sending out emails, marketing to my target market, adjusting our pricing and business model, but quick decisive actions have allowed us to continually help support learning across the country. After I gave myself a yes in starting this business no one else’ no mattered. I didn’t need permission, I don’t need permission. I needed a strong mission and found support along the way.
