We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cassandra Bautista a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cassandra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am very happy to be a creator of shows and an actress. I love that I am able to tell stories through media using videos, blogs, and performing in front of audiences. I like that in order to be able to do these things I was propelled to build my own businesses so that I would have the flexibility to go to auditions and to make my own work hours so that I could write, direct, and host my own shows. I do not like regular jobs I do not like waking up early, going outside in the cold and dark weather. I also do not like driving through rush hour traffic being stuck in heavy traffic and not getting paid for this time. Only to go to an office job where you sit down in one room for eight hours of your day being confined to a small space. Regular jobs feel like being in jail or prison. I am happy that I able to wake up when I choose go to sleep when I choose and take days off without needing two weeks advance notice. I am also happy that I can take days off or months off without fear of losing a job. I do not have to be timed when going to restroom either like some companies that try to micromanage their employees. Many friends and family members try to talk me into getting a regular job but honestly I am living a much happier life than them. I live in the state I love California on the ocean and I am surrounded by important people who are very driven. I sometimes think about regular jobs but once someone starts asking me to update my resume. I think to myself oh hell no I don’t answer to anyone. I prefer freedom any day over a regular 9am to 5 pm job working for someone else.
Cassandra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a mother and a grandmother who has worked in radio, television, film, marketing, and at a law office for a public official, I got into entertainment after reading Russell Simmons book “Do You”. However, I took a theater course in college before deciding to move from Arizona to California to pursue a career in entertainment. But Simmons book gave me the courage to move to a city that is an entertainment capitol. After I moved to Los Angeles I got my first job in entertainment by working for 20th Century Fox, Next I moved on to the radio station, then Disney. After that I went to film school plus took acting, music, and baking classes.
I enjoy learning. I am constantly reading, watching videos, taking courses, and listening to podcasts. I think what sets me a part from others I am dependable, very creative, work hard in multiple areas, and have many contacts. I am very proud that I am able to independently create my own shows and hire people who historically have not been visible for many decades in show business.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I have build my various audiences on social media by having different channels for each different subject that I have business in or experience in. I then create content that caters to that group of people. I offer them resources, leaders in that field, prizes, funny content, content that they can relate to, and I include them in my content. I remember that most people don’t necessarily want to see me they want to see themselves through me. To build a social media presence you can advertise and promote posts to grow audiences. In addition you can ask for reviews of your business or services. You can also have days to meet up with your audience. People love to network off of social media and in person for special occasions. I believe in telling people exactly what you want. Tell viewers to subscribe, share, and like your content. You can also inbox all of your followers the link to join your page or watch your videos.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have since elementary school felt drawn to protect people of color and disadvantaged populations. My goal is to educate groups of people who do not have much exposure to certain subjects and experiences, resources, finances, and support to change their lives and live a healthier, happier life with many opportunities for themselves and their families. I hope to encourage these groups of people to set goals, open their own businesses, create their own opportunities, and fight for what they believe in. My shows and businesses all involve these same groups of people as well as people who can guide them to upward positions and places.
