We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Casie Shepherd a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Casie , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I never really knew what I wanted to do all through college. I knew I wanted to work with people in some capacity but to what extent was unknown. I loved to workout, I loved how nutrition made me feel and changed my body. I knew that some of the health issues I was facing were corrected when I changed my diet and I continued to just work on myself and what I enjoyed doing. That ultimately led me through many experiences that caused me to dive deeper into health, wellness, hormones, gut health, and the root of where issues in the body lie. I wouldn’t say it was a risk I consciously took, I just felt so unhappy and unfulfilled at any other job doing anything else but working for myself helping people. I spent a long time struggling financially and with my purpose as I developed the business into what it is today and having the credentials and experience. I risked a lot not knowing I’d actually succeed at it and be where I am today!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello I’m Casie Shepherd and I’m a health coach. I’m former division 1 basketball player turned retired IFBB professional bodybuilder. I had what I would call a tough childhood suffering from Tourette’s, OCD, anxiety, and depression. Mentally struggling, education was never my strong suit and really being able to pay attention and grasp things well as I was constantly overstimulated and worried about everything else going on around me. Being medicated for several years made me feel different and started to delay puberty when I finally decided to come off all my meds. Luckily some of the disorders calmed as I finally hit puberty and hit my major growth spurt all the while finding what truly made me feel empowered in the sport of basketball. Coming off meds and getting a surge of hormones entering womanhood didin’t come without it’s problems though. I always had a hard time feeling in shape and breathing well. I earned a full ride scholarship for basketball and that feeling never really went away. My sophomore year of college I got really sick and was on rounds of Antibiotics. My guts never were the same after that and when I really started to focus on learning nutrition. After my sophomore year and all of that happening I ended up quitting and giving my scholarship up. We had a coaching change that left me unhappy. But this allowed me to focus on my health and actually learning what to put into my body. I got into training differently and fueling rather than just eating crap food all day and this led me into bodybuilding. Years of bodybuilding put a lot of stress on my body and created a different set of issues as I competed on the pro level. I definitely learned the hard way how over dieting and training can affect the entire endocrine system and how everything works as a whole. Not being able to find people to help ME through my healing is what really brought me down the rabbit hole of figuring myself and the body out. Like most people, it was SO hard for me to find someone who could listen to my symptoms, take enough blood work to actually get a proper assessment, then understand how to look at everything as a whole. This is what I now help people with all over the country!
What sets me apart is my deep understanding of the body and how it all works together. You have to balance stress/lifestyle, you have to be eating enough of the right things, and you have to have the right protocols in order to allow the body to come into balance. Healing happens in phases and most of that is done in a state of balance. Most people are so focused on looking a certain way they can’t handle the process of balancing first so your system can feel safe enough to heal!
I offer a variety of services from different 1 on 1 coaching packages to one time hormone consulting. People who come to me are looking for answers to many long time symptoms, disorders, and issues that they can’t figure out. Most people have only 1 piece of the puzzle down. It may take the edge off a few things but then understandably, it’s never enough to get them through it as they miss other pieces that are needed to get to the other side. I look at everything from symptoms, to lifestyle, to workouts you are doing, to your diet, your supplementation, and your history to really evaluate and make a plan.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I think being authentic is the best way to grow clientele. I’d say majority of my clients are referrals from current or former clients or follow me on social media and get to know who I am and what i’m about. I think being transparent about things you have personally gone through, what’s important to you, how you speak, how you motivate, and the vibe you give off allows the right people to come to you!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Several times I’ve pivoted from my goals into different directions. The first time was in basketball giving up my scholarship after thinking I would potentially be in the WNBA at some point. The second time was competing in the IFBB at the top federation in the world and just knowing that it wasn’t serving me anymore and retiring. I always knew I was meant to be on top somewhere. Being 6’2″ I’ve confidently known I stand out from the crowd in a number of ways. My early life made me feel like I needed to excel in order to be recognized and that came through sports and physicalness. As I got through both of those things and into more of my business, I realize my platform in the fitness realms allowed me to be recognized in many ways, but that developed a larger platform for me to get my messages out and help people on a larger scale. You see how every scenario of life starts to mold you into who you are supposed to be. For me I know there is so much left and new shifts coming in my business!
