We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cash Campain. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cash below.
Alright, Cash thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
10,000 hours. I’ve spent so many days, nights, and hours creating that it feels natural to me now. It was not always that way. It took a while for me to find my voice and understand myself as a creative. And when I say creative, I mean in all areas. Musically, visually, writing… everything. The years of work have enabled me to find my voice and sharpen my artistic mind. I’m able to find my creative rhythm because I’ve built a permanent line that allows me to stay connected to that side of myself.
Cash, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I feel like I was always meant to be a creative. My father showed me how to move through the world as a professional artist, and I use many of his lessons and indirect teachings to this day. To date I’ve released 13 studio albums, a book (soon to be two), a handful of short films, music videos, and countless singles.
I’m most proud of the fact that I haven’t given up. I’ve pushed forward and stayed true to myself even when I had every reason to give up. Also, I’ve challenged myself to do more than I originally thought possible. I never thought I would have short films or a couple of books in my creative catalog. I haven’t achieved all of my dreams, but I’ve realized some new ones I never thought possible.
Imagine what I’ll do next.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I was just getting started with my career I was fortunate enough to get booked as an opener for a show headlined by Lupe Fiasco and Miguel. The promoters were not supportive or welcoming at all. I had to deal with disrespect and a lack of resources. Man, they didn’t even give my team and I artist passes when we arrived at the venue. They cut my music off before I finished my set, and, because I was nervous, I cracked on a note during one of my songs. After my set they asked us to leave the building. I had never been treated so poorly or been more embarrassed after a performance.
A silver lining came when I got to meet Miguel outside in the parking lot when he arrived. I was also able to hang out with a few of my HBK homies before they took the stage as well. I went home a bit discouraged, and very upset, but I never considered giving up. Lastly, someone in the audience was so impressed by my performance that they invited me back to perform again at that same venue the following weekend.
All that to say, you never know who’s watching. So, stay classy, humble, and persistent.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
