We recently connected with Casey Mensing and have shared our conversation below.

Casey, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.

As a creative, risk-taking is an essential element. No matter what form your creative act takes, you must push yourself out of your comfort zone to develop and evolve as an artist. Then if you want to pursue a career in a creative field, that’s a massive risk because there is little financial reward and almost no compensation for the majority. In a money-driven society such as the one we live in, that seems like a crazy proposition. So, when someone decides to turn their artistic vocation into a career, you know they’re willing to take a personal risk.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I’m an award-winning screenwriter and author of the books I Am Ahab, The Unimaginable City, and Judith. My nomadic existence currently finds me living in Downtown Los Angeles. In my free time, I enjoy painting, taking photos, and bringing home stray books. I’m most proud of my commitment to my artistic vocation. I’ve continually evolved creatively and taken on projects of all types.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

Anything you create has the potential to live forever.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?

One of the more interesting concepts that I think it’s hard for non-creatives to understand about being a creative is how creating is a passion and a way of existing in the world. Then it evolves into a calling or a vocation that consumes you, and you have to do it no matter what. For most, it stays in that sphere, but for a fortunate few, it becomes a career.
