We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Casey Goslin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Casey below.
Casey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Odd Jane was a name I was sitting on for years. I kept drawing little logos and trying to decide what I wanted my business to be. It came to me because I tend to be a bit odd, and I indulge in the greener parts of life. However, it has become so much more than that.
Broken down, we all know odd means unusual. Jane is a gift from God. Since we all have different interpretations of Yahweh, I have chosen to envoke Gaia. Mother earth. I see my company exactly as it’s been named. Unusual gifts from Gaia. Once I saw the path I needed was removing the chemicals from our bodies, and using herbs for healing, I knew I’d chosen the right name.
Casey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I always knew we were using poison. I was the same as most people, assuming it was an unavoidable perk of life. Until I remembered my great grandmothers teachings. She was a Bruja de Rancho. A witch of the ranch. She used herbs and the earth to heal and coerce the energies of life in her favor.
I lost myself, starting pretty young, to a violent relationship. In doing so, I lost my connection with nature and my own abilities to trust my intuition and my ancestors guidance. After years of self reflection and healing, I found the purpose id been seeking. This was about making my children safe and connected. Making sure they understood what we absorb into ourselves becomes us. The more people heard my ideology, the more requests I had to try my products. Odd jane was born.
The skincare and teas are a small part of a community I’m building. Humans weren’t meant to live in the fast paced, no room for mistakes, stress cities we’re in. We are meant to have our feet on the Earth. Providing for ourselves while nuturing the land provided to us by our birth right.
The goal of all of this is to show everyone theres a better way. That we can grow our food and heal ourselves. We can breathe. No need to rush. We were meant to enjoy our time here. We should start.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Farmers Markets. They change everything. Craft fairs and the like. I meet so many amazing people. I gain so many friends and clients from being able to set up and connect. It’s more than just selling. It’s meeting likeminded people that are on a similar path. They provide an opportunity to use local sources for any ingredients I’m not able to grow or make myself, and products you hadnt even considered.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I currently have my own website. I have considered expanding to seller sites such as Etsy. I’ve had decent traffic flow from my website just by advertising on social media.
Pros of only using my website, mean everything is all in one place. When I make in person sales or do days at the farmer’s market, I don’t have to worry about updating inventory across multiple avenues.
Cons would be I’m potentially missing out on a high volume of customers. My goal is quality, not quantity. If it takes longer for my products to become sought-after because I’m taking my time and ensuring that, I’m ok with that.
