We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Casey Gorab. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Casey below.
Alright, Casey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My artistic path began at a young age. I performed in my first musical when I was 5 years old, and continued performing throughout my entire childhood. Around age 9, I began to pursue this passion professionally. I am lucky to have grown up right outside New York City, so I would frequently audition for Broadway shows as a kid. When I was 11, I landed a role in the national tour of “A Christmas Story the Musical,” which was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Being fully immersed in the professional theater industry at such a young age was an eye opening experience and I fell completely in love with everything about it. While performing isn’t my main career path anymore, I always knew that I would find my way to build my career in the entertainment industry one way or another.

Casey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I write music for film, media and musical theater!
Music is one of the best ways to expose unspoken emotions, and that is why I do what I do. My goal as a composer is to write music that helps people understand feelings that are tough to articulate verbally.
With that in mind, my two main groups of clients are independent film directors and theater companies. I make it a strong priority to build a close relationship with everyone I collaborate with, and I have a unique variety of skills coming from a musical theater background that can set me apart from others. I’ve composed music for dozens of award winning films, documentaries, and animations which have been featured in festivals all around the US. In addition, I’ve written original music for cabarets that theater companies host, and am currently organizing a reading for my first original musical.
Breaking into this career path started with volunteering to compose for theater companies and short films – once I had a few projects under my belt, people began to reach out on their own and work started coming in! I still reach out to projects I would love to be involved in, but I am grateful that even in this early stage of my career, people trust me with their artistic vision.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think our society in many ways tends to view anything emotional as “weak.” Since art is based on human emotion, people with that mindset tend to not take it seriously. The bare minimum is to respect artists the same way you’d respect scientists, doctors, lawyers etc. Everyone makes exceptional contributions to society in their own way, whether that be the logistical/practical side of society or the emotional side of society.
Listen to new music. Check out an art gallery. Go see a show. Not only are you supporting artists by doing so, but I can guarantee it is an excellent way to break free of an old routine, learn more about the world, and stay in touch with your emotions.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I am always most fulfilled by projects that spark human connection. During the pandemic in 2020, I composed a virtual choir and gathered 80 singers to send in recordings from their homes. This was one of the most rewarding experiences because I was able to connect with so many beautiful people in a time of isolation. Giving these people an outlet to share their voice made me incredibly happy as well.
In addition, writing music that brings characters to life in film is incredibly rewarding. When it comes to musical theater, watching singers (especially the middle and high school singers) find their voice through a song I wrote for them makes me beyond happy. Honesty, any time I can see that I’ve helped someone find confidence in themselves or their art, I feel extremely fulfilled.
