We recently connected with Casey George and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Casey, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I didn’t realize I wanted to pursue a creative field til about high school. Growing up I thought I wanted to be a meteorologist, or enlist in the Army like my father did, or become a veterinarian. However, a lot of people noticed that I watch a LOT of animated content and draw a lot! I would even listen to some behind the scenes documentaries out of curiosity! Everyone I knew said I would do amazing in the creative field. I did research and low and behold I can pursue a creative field as a job! I originally wanted to be a graphic designer for video game studios as it seemed like something cool and simple to do! I dabbled with some coding and animation on a site called Scratch and definitely solidified me being in the creative field!
Casey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I would be delighted!
My name is Casey George! If that name doesn’t quite ring a bell, I’m also known as WeatherWitch or Weather0Witch in the internet spaces! I’m a creative with many talents, such as graphic design, illustrations, 2D animation and voice acting! I studied Media Arts and Animation at the Art Institutes of San Antonio. I’m also a proud hispanic Army Brat and a skilled martial artist of 4 fighting styles!
For my voice acting, I’m known for voicing in Gwain Saga as Princess Ami, Stacy Stackhouse in Sally MountainPeak, YUMiCON’s anime convention mascots Yumiko and Mochi, Dalia from Historia: Protect the Sun, and I recently got my first video game role in Vindictive Drive 2: Maidbot Archives as ARA Santa Fe! I’m also working on my own indie animated production called Mission: Space Cops 24!
What sets me apart from most creatives is my multi-media abilities! A lot of people, at least in the industry I studied for, are taught to specialize in one specific area of design. For me, everything in the industry is so exciting that I want to do more than one thing! I can design a really cool logo, design an illustration for a voice actor to sell at their next convention, 2D animate a short tiktok for a company, even storyboard a project for a youtuber I’m collaborating with. I think it’s important to not creatively limit yourself and learn some new skills to be a better creative and leader! I am my own boss in my career and it’s my responsibility to keep up to par with my creative skill sets and knowledge! I like to create something cool and unique for my clients while also giving their characters life vocally when I’m called to it!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I would say my career story when it was beginning is an example of resilience! Let me put this story in a bit of a condensed nutshell!
Everyone knows what happened in 2020. I was a 2020 Media Arts & Animation graduate in my college, The Art Institutes of San Antonio. I was top of my classes, even set to graduate early. Due to worldwide events that occurred, my life and career got snapped away when it was just beginning. I never got my internship, no ceremony, and no help from my college either. Some animation industry people said my career is DOA due to when I finished school and the timing of it all. I kept trying and applied everywhere in the industry while I was working retail, but the rejection messages piled on. Things looked bleak until I discovered a talent that became the key to saving my career. Voice acting! I got my first professional role in Gwain Saga episode 008! The series blew up on YouTube and helped me and my work be seen. It took me a while to really figure out this new talent of mine and what it could lead to. So, in early 2022, I traveled to one or two conventions and got to meet some cool voice actors to get some advice! One day, a small anime convention discovered my work! I was going to message them but realized, they were a local convention in my home city of San Antonio called YUMiCON! I was nervous that it would be another passing rejection but I decided to give them a try and meet them in person! I took a day off at retail and went to their upcoming outdoor convention called Mochifest! I met the YUMiCON team, and in doing so led me to a new open door! They were impressed with my work as both a designer and a voice actor that they wanted to help me! I got the opportunity to make animations and art for the convention and became the voice of their convention mascots! Being with YUMiCON led me to a world of amazing opportunities I didn’t think I’d be a part of. They even became the internship I never got to have! People say when one door closes, another one opens even if it takes a while! This team of amazing people lended me a hand and gave me confidence on where I needed to go. To make the story come full circle, YUMiCON made me a voice guest for Mochifest 2024! The same event I met them 2 years ago.
This story of resilience is quite a crazy one. It’s not like most creatives in the industry I studied for. However, it has led me to where I am in life today!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I have two rewarding aspects about being a creative that I feel are very important to me! The first is knowing how many people see your work and get inspired by you! Whether it be from my voice acting, my art, or meeting me at a convention. I remember my first autograph signing, my first convention appearance, seeing a cosplayer dressed as my first role in person and it’s an amazing feeling! I am not ashamed to admit but I cry tears of joy a little after a convention appearance. I cherish all those moments deeply and I can’t wait for more moments like those. The best part is, it doesn’t stop! It keeps going and going! As long as I keep creating, or voice acting, there will be many more opportunities to come. The second rewarding aspect is the potential for collaboration with other creatives! A unique aspect of me being a multi-media person is I can design cool stuff for fellow voice actors and other artists when the opportunity presents itself! I love collaboration and networking because you never know what awesome creation you can make with the friends you’ve made!
