We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Casey Cannon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Casey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear you experience with and lessons learned from recruiting and team building.
Hiring an additional team member was the biggest challenge and blessing for my business in 2022. Going into this year, I knew I would need skilled help to execute the weddings EBJ had on the books, and give my couples the care and attention they deserve up until their big day.
It was important for me to find someone that not only understood weddings and the hard work that goes into bringing them to life, but someone that truly had a servant’s heart. At the core, that is what we as wedding planners do, and that is what I want my company to be remembered for. Yes we make pretty things come to life, but even more importantly than that, we are meant to be trustworthy guides through a process someone will (hopefully) only do once in their lifetime.
As I interviewed candidates, I asked questions that would allow them to share about their problem solving skills and how they handled tough circumstances with grace and a calm spirit. In the end, I think the process worked well because I hired the perfect girl, Presley Russell. She is not only a superstar employee and planner, but I’m so blessed to now call her a good friend.

Casey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After assisting a close family friend and wedding planner with her weddings for 2 years full time, I was grateful to take over the business as she transitioned to retirement. In 2019 I became the owner and lead planner at EBJ & Company. We believe marriage is God’s greatest gift and weddings are the perfect way to celebrate that.
Our true bread and butter is working with the bride and groom from shortly after the engagement, all the way through the end of the wedding day. We want you to enjoy this sweet time of being engaged and know you have a true advocate with your best interests at heart, working for you behind the scenes.
A few values we carry throughout planning is open communication, professionalism, and an orderly & peaceful process. We take designing our couples’ weddings very seriously, spending countless hours researching and creating your personalized design plan so you have a one of a kind wedding that is meaningful to you and your future spouse.
For those that chose to plan their own wedding we delight in relieving the couple & their families from the final to dos in the weeks leading up to the big day by offering Event Management.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I’m continually amazed to meet the new couples that come my way year after year. I really owe this to my past brides as well as longstanding relationships with vendor and venue partners. Without their referrals, I would not be able to plan the incredible weddings that come my way.
I’ve found it is so important to provide that positive & organized presence and expertise for not only my client’s but the people that have a hand in bringing their day to life as well. It really is a team effort, and when the team doesn’t work together or communicate well, we all suffer.
My favorite weddings are the ones that have a strong vendor team morale and that makes the whole day feel effortless. The vendors are happy and that in turn provides a higher quality service and happier couples in the end.

Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
My love and gratitude for Jesus is really my driving mission for this journey. Though I have learned a lot throughout the years and have become more and more confident in my ability to do this job well, I am continually challenged and often doubtful in the path ahead, wondering if I have what it takes. The Lord has sustained me every step of the way and continually provides me with reassurance that as long as I choose Him first, the rest will fall into place. It is not always easy, but God provides. I’ve found that to be true in business, and in personal life. If I can share that through my work and interactions with my couples and colleagues, then I know they will be taken care of too.
