We recently connected with Casandra Haynes and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Casandra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I’ve been in the media world since high school so of course I decide to pursue it in college. After graduating from the University of North Texas in Public Relations, I decided to freelance for a while because I wasn’t sure a PR agency would be a good fit for me. I freelanced for a few years, then decided to go legit. I did a lot of research and decided I wanted to manage models/music artists and host events. So after I obtained 4 DBAs, I took off running by attending as many music and fashion events as possible. I’ve learned that people are more likely to do business with you if they see your face often. A familiar face generates money. I would go to fashion events, take photos of the event and the models with my iPhone and then I would take the photos and tag everybody and post them on social media. I did this every weekend until people started asking me who I was and started wanting me to get involved in their events. When I wasn’t at fashion events, I was circulating all the open mic events in Dallas and getting familiar with the important people. That pushed me into the game fast! After that, I started hosting my own fashion, music, and other types of events. I became a franchise partner with Miss Fashion Week, but I left after the company split. I believe that was a very eye opening experience because that was the first time I made such a big investment in my craft. I spent thousands of dollars just to fail, but the experience was priceless. That was the door that opened for me to work with people with real money, change my way of thinking, and to execute future ideas successfully.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
First and foremost, my main occupation is Publicist/PR/Marketing Director. Media has always been my baby from the first time I published my first news article. It is the main thing I do and my main source of income. I provide services such as web building, graphics of all sorts, personal assistance, content writing, business consultations, and much more. Kashmere Marketing and Media Group can take your company from its current state and help increase visibility and profit based on strategic marketing strategies. Our team takes time to talk with each client and we develop a special marketing plan for them based on their needs and goals. We ensure that we execute the ideas of the client and not our own ideas for them. We want to help people execute their vision in the best way we can. We stand apart from other similar agencies because we don’t give you a text book plan. We think outside the box and every marketing plan is unique in its own way. I revamped my marketing company this year and I am proud to say that I have building a media/marketing company from the ground up since 2013. For the most part, I’ve done everything by myself. The planning, the meetings, the driving, the money, the branding, everything! I just started developing a real team in 2021. In addition to my media company, I provide other services such as tax preparation, beauty products, tutoring, and more.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
I met my current business partner through a model I use to manage. She was working out of an office in downtown Dallas and she told me she wanted me to meet “some guy” who owned two floors in her building. So I rode the bus/train to downtown Dallas. When I met him I was trying to get back into business, I was down on my luck, only one one pair of shoes, and didn’t feel like I deserve to talk to him. We met at Moxie’s Restaurant. I had to give my pitch in front of several people and Iw as so nervous. He brought me back to his office, we set a date from the first event, and the rest is history.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I started with what I had and where I was at. I’m not a budgeting type person. Usually I just find out how much something costs and just come up with the money. I used my paychecks from my jobs, side hustles, and the small events I was hosting to host bigger events and to invest in myself in various ways. When I started my beauty business, I started by selling make up and jewelry that I owned, but never used. I’m a risk taker and I’m willing to start small and building myself up in anything that I do
