We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Caryn Kirchhoff-herrera a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Caryn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I took a huge leap of faith going out on my own. I was terrified that no one would come . I decided to run a Groupon and that changed the game for me. I sold 300 facials with no reputation! That was huge! So from there I just hit the ground running. I built a monthly membership in order to keep my clients coming back. I would not have done anything differently to be honest. As far as advice I would say to make your own way. Yes people will give you advice but honestly you know what is best for you and your business. It is not always easy, but it is definitely always worth it!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I call myself a facilitator of healing because I use a blend of different modalities to help people evolve and grow within themselves. I have been an esthetician for 15 years, and that is a way I help people ground and enjoy state of deep relaxation. I hold breathwork classes, where one utilizes a patterned breathing to aid the body in releasing stagnant emotions from the body. This is my favorite way to help people because it is just so potent! I am so proud of the blend I have built in my business of all the different ways to help people.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As my practice grew I moved into bigger locations. I went from a one room studio to then a three room! I was elated. Not long after being there we were told due to zoning my type of business could not be there. Confused I spoke with the landlord and told them I had to break the lease as my business could not operate there. They were not having it. It was a battle. We ended up breaking the lease and leaving anyway. Which then led us to find my current location that is the best we have had! It was 6 rooms and is in a great location! It was so scary in the moment, but everything happens for a reason! We are all thriving in this location!
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I would definitely say being true to who you are and connecting deeply with your clients. When you work with people in the way I do you can feel the energy. So if you are doing a service just for the money people can tell.
