We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cary Diaz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cary below.
Cary, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success can be identified and achieved in so many ways. What may be successful to one person, may not be the case for another.
For me, success is being genuinely happy and proud with what you do and your growth.
I have always taken pride not only in the quality of my work, but the entire client experience, from the initial email inquiring about services to the moment a gallery or print product is delivered.
I feel the most successful when I have clients that come back to me year after year knowing that I am the only one they trust to capture their life’s most important moments.
In order to be successful, especially in this industry, I feel like you must never forget how you treated those very first clients when you first started. I believe the same drive and care you start your business with should continue with you as your business grows.

Cary, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Cary Diaz and I am the face behind Cary Diaz Photography (CDP). I am also a crazy busy, but very blessed mom of 3 beautiful children and the wife of an amazing man, who pushed me to start this little “dream” of mine. He also tolerates my endless daily babbles and late nights drinking coffee and editing.
If I’m not shooting some incredible people or editing late at night, you can usually find me picking up Starbucks, dropping off or picking up one of my little monsters, visiting Disney, on my iPhone, shopping for a new bag or makeup or finding any excuse to go to Target and spending far more than I should!
Want to know more? You sure? 😏 Here we go…
I have this really weird string and jewelry phobia (I know, it’s really strange). I hate bananas, love soda, wear glasses (99% of the time), & LOVE cheese. I can touch my tongue to my nose. There is a 12 year gap between my brother and I (I’m the baby). I have read the Twilight books 4 times, yet I don’t read much otherwise, and I watch too many reality TV shows. I spent 10 years in college studying to be a doctor, pharmacist, advertiser, teacher, and english major (I may be forgetting one) only to find out that my true passion was photography.
My love for photography began many years ago while I shadowed my father who was a professional photographer during the film era. I couldn’t stop noticing how happy and timeless the children and couples he photographed were. He was capturing mini pieces of their history and his clients were forever grateful. He truly inspired me to capture life’s most memorable moments, telling a story with each shot by emphasizing that momentary glance, not missing an intoxicating smile, and sharing in all laughs. I embarked on this crazy journey in 2010 a few months after my son was born. He (and of course my girls) inspired me to be a better person and accomplish things I never thought possible.
Pictures are EXTREMELY important to me. My children’s photos are my most prized possesions. When they are more grown up than I ever want them to be, I want to remember their incredible smiles and their oh-so-adorable faces. I treat every one of my clients with the upmost priority, because I know how important the pictures I take are for you.
Clients search for their perfect photographer. That perfect fit is so important not just for the client but for the photographer as well. I want to fall in love with each of my clients, their families and their stories. I want to capture that couple that can’t stop laughing and can’t keep their hands off of each other, the mischievous child that laughs that slightly evil belly laugh when he or she is caught doing something he or she shouldn’t be doing, but gives the warmest hugs to mom and dad, and the excitement of a teenager reaching a birthday or graduation milestone, and his or her emotional parents not quite ready for the unavoidable but bright future.
Cary Diaz Photography specializes in baby, children and family photography both in studio and outdoors. From the initial email to receiving your products, clients can expect a catered, boutique type experience.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Good customer service will always be the number way to grow clients. Social media, ads and so many other things are bonuses but the most effective way to grow is having your clients “sell” your business for you.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Building a business is amazing, but to say it is easy is far from the truth. There have been so many emotional and physical hurdles I have faced over my 12+ years in business.
One of the hardest hurdles I dealt with was when I had my second child and shortly after found out I had to undergo retinal detachment surgery. Not only did I take a financial hit, but physically I had to endure a difficult recovery and 3 months of no sight from one eye.
It did not end there though. While pregnant with my 3rd child, I had to have the same surgery on my other eye, leaving me to struggle again financially and physically.
Despite the challenges, I was able to push through and be resilient.
