We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carter Crosby a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Carter thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I finally released my first EP! It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years, but nothing ever felt ready. Then, early last year, I wrote Providence. In this EP I explore themes of family, identity, and personal growth, and experiment with extremely minimal production in an effort to create a more intimate and accessible sound. But, what I’m most excited to do is communicate in the most effective way I know how— with my guitar. Available on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. Feel free to check it out, and let me know what you think!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My family has always had a shared interest in music. My dad is a drummer, and my mom an avid 80s music fan. But when I picked up guitar for the first time, I found a voice in the world that I could truly call my own. Later, I went to James Madison University to pursue a degree in Musical Theatre and Creative Writing. Class of ‘22– go Dukes! Now, I’m a working actor/musician in the DMV area that also creates original music.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Ultimately, creating is a vehicle for me to explore and respond to myself and my surroundings. Ideally, I can use this knowledge of myself to create art that others can relate and respond to.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think, as a creative person, I often feel as if I see the world differently than others. Sometimes, maybe even from the “outside.” But, this allows me to really consider different perspectives. I think some people may have trouble seeing from different perspectives— because we’re not always pushed to.
